OpenSSL Technical Advisory Committee Elections

The OpenSSL Corporation alongside the OpenSSL Foundation is excited to announce the commencement of the elections for the Technical Advisory Committees (TACs). This marks a pivotal moment in shaping the future of the OpenSSL community, inviting all registered members to take part in this democratic process. Here’s everything you need to know.

Voting Details and Process

The voting period for these crucial elections started on April 28, 2025, and will continue until May 11, 2025, at 12:00 PM UTC. To cast your vote, all eligible participants are required to log in to their respective Community Groups. Once logged in, navigate to the THREADS section to access the relevant election thread for either the OpenSSL Corporation or the OpenSSL Foundation.

This voting process is not merely a formality. It reflects a commitment to the values and future prospects of the OpenSSL community. Your vote plays a vital role in ensuring that the leadership within the advisory committees is both thoughtful and representative of the community’s diverse priorities.

Representation Across Various Groups

The elections accommodate diverse representation through voter delegation. Here’s how voting is structured:

  • - Academics: Each academic entity will have an appointed delegate responsible for casting a single vote representing their institution.
  • - Committers: Individuals classified as committers are permitted one vote each.
  • - Distributions: Similar to academics, distributions have designated delegates to voice their single vote.
  • - Individuals: Every individual in the community possesses the right to cast one vote.
  • - Large and Small Businesses: Both categories will have appointed delegates to manage their respective votes.

To maintain the integrity of the election, it is mandatory for a minimum of 15% participation from each group to ensure the election is valid. This process will utilize an open ballot system, fostering an environment of transparency and trust amongst the community members. Each elected position will be held for a term of one year.

The Role of the Election Committee

The election is overseen by an Election Committee formed by the current directors from both the OpenSSL Corporation and the OpenSSL Foundation. Looking ahead, future elections are expected to incorporate a more varied representation from outside the organizational structure, thereby enhancing the decision-making process.

Tim Hudson, President of the OpenSSL Corporation, emphasized the significance of this election, stating, "The TAC elections provide a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the future of the OpenSSL Library. Your participation will help ensure we continue to grow and make strong, informed decisions." Meanwhile, Matt Caswell, President of the OpenSSL Foundation, encouraged all individuals invested in the OpenSSL Library to participate actively. “The TAC will help navigate significant technical decisions, and your voice is essential in making this process successful,” he shared.

An Invitation to the Community

We urge all eligible members within the OpenSSL community to participate in this vital election. By casting your vote, you help contribute to a collective mission and values that underpin the OpenSSL project. If you need assistance or have any questions, feel free to reach out through our Communities website or contact us directly at [email protected].
