Frescoball Rikuzen-Takata Cup 2026: A Celebration of Sport and Community
The Japan Frescoball Association (JFBA) recently unveiled a special website for the upcoming
Rikuzen-Takata Cup 2026, set to take place on
August 8-9 in
Rikuzen-Takata City, Iwate Prefecture. This annual event is not just a highlight on the sports calendar, but also a platform for addressing critical environmental concerns, specifically the invasive kudzu plant damaging local pine trees.
Empowering Communities Through Sport
The theme of this year's cup, "Revitalizing Communities from the Waterfront," underscores the collaboration with the
Waterfront Bond Project 2026, a program dedicated to supporting various activities in disaster-affected areas. For three consecutive years, this initiative has provided local communities with vital resources and educational support. In
2024, the focus will be on passing down the local tsunami response wisdom known as "Tsunami Tendenko," a vital lesson for all Frescoball players nationwide.
2025 will see collaborations with students from
Iwate University to design essential disaster preparedness items for beachgoers.
The Battle Against Kudzu
This year, there's a special emphasis on the
kudzu damage to Takada Matsubara. While these trees initially appeared to thrive, they have been choked by the invasive kudzu, leading to their decay. The launch of the special site aims to spread awareness about this ecological issue, detailing how the community is addressing it.
In May, a pre-event took place with involvement from the
Sanriku Frescoball Club and a lecture from the
Takada Matsubara Protection Association’s vice president, focusing on the kudzu problem. Participants engaged in hands-on kudzu removal activities, reflecting the real conditions of Rikuzen-Takata. During the main event in August, insights gleaned from these pre-activities will be shared during a halftime show, aiming to further educate the players and attendees about local challenges.
An Enhanced Event for Environmental Awareness
The Rikuzen-Takata Cup 2026 promises to be more than just an athletic competition; it’s a powerful event aimed at increasing awareness of disaster preparedness as well as environmental conservation along coastal areas. With this being the fifth consecutive year for an official Frescoball tournament in Rikuzen-Takata, the event continues to grow in significance and engagement.

What is Frescoball?
Frescoball originated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on
Copacabana Beach in 1945. This beach sport, which has now gained worldwide popularity, stands out due to its unique scoring system, where two players do not compete against each other but cooperate to keep the rally alive. The competition lasts for five minutes, with players maintaining a distance of seven meters. Known as a "sport of compassion," Frescoball embodies the spirit of teamwork.
The JFBA is actively working towards the unification of international rules in collaboration with the
Frescoball Federation of Rio de Janeiro (FEFERJ). They are also establishing the first international organization,
UAFI, in October 2025. With a focus on promoting a uniquely Japanese culture of Frescoball that revolves around year-round enjoyment and sports tourism, the JFBA is enhancing its outreach efforts. Currently,
29 officially recognized regional clubs and
6 recognized student teams are registered in Japan.
