Welcome to the ISM Open House 2025
On May 23, 2025, the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (ISM) will host its Open House event with the theme "The Challenges of Data Science - Prediction, Discovery, and Creation". This year’s program aims to address significant global issues such as climate change, bringing together researchers and graduate students for an engaging day of presentations and discussions.
What to Expect
The Open House will feature:
- - Public Lectures: Focusing on "Environmental Science and Data Science in the Anthropocene," experts will delve into how trans-disciplinary (TD) research can help tackle global challenges. Topics include understanding past climate change, future predictions, and spatial demographic projections under various societal scenarios.
- - Research Poster Presentations: From 1 PM to 3 PM, faculty and graduate students will present their research in an easy-to-understand format. All posters will be displayed throughout the day, with a dedicated core time for interaction.
- - Statistical Consultation Room: From 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM, guests can ask diverse questions related to statistics, receiving answers in approximately 30-minute sessions.
- - Graduate School Information Session: For those interested in pursuing a degree in the Statistical Science Course at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, current students and alumni will share insights about the program and entry procedures from 10 AM to 12 PM.
Program Highlights
1. Public Lectures
- - Opening Remarks: Presented by Tomoshi Yamashita, Director of the ISM.
- - Keynote Speech: Yoshiaki Yasuoka, Emeritus Professor at The University of Tokyo, will discuss "Can Science and Technology Change Society? - The Mission and Role of Trans-disciplinary Research".
