Present Tree Project Achieves Significant Recognition
The Japanese initiative, Present Tree, managed by the certified NPO Environmental Relations Institute, was recently honored with the Decarbonization Award at the Sustainable Award 2025, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan. This acknowledgment underscores the project’s commitment to simultaneously achieving forest restoration and regional revitalization.
Overview of Present Tree
Launched in 2005, Present Tree has made considerable strides in promoting both forest restoration and regional development over the past 21 years. The initiative has successfully planted approximately 430,000 trees across 60 locations in Japan, engaging around 430,000 individuals in the process.
The most notable aspect of Present Tree is its unique approach of allowing individuals to plant trees as gifts for themselves or their loved ones. This concept has resonated with many urban dwellers, who have planted trees in neglected forests across the nation, including areas affected by disasters and former golf courses or ranches.
Moreover, the project emphasizes not just planting trees but also nurturing them alongside local communities for a decade. This interaction fosters a connection between individuals and the local area, encouraging visits and exchanges that ultimately invigorate both the forests and the regions they symbolize.
