Exploring the Role of Pop Culture Communities in Social Contribution Efforts

On March 11, 2026, the Japan Cosplay Culture Promotion Association (Chairperson: Tomoko Amano) organized a meaningful symposium in Akihabara, Tokyo, titled 'Leveraging Japan’s Pop Culture for Social Contribution Activities.' The event aimed to explore the potential of anime, manga, gaming, and cosplay culture in addressing social issues beyond mere entertainment.

The symposium attracted over 160 attendees, including stakeholders from IP entities, businesses, local governments, and the media. Participants engaged in lively discussions based on unique survey results that showcased how Japan’s pop culture could play an active role in solving societal challenges. Recent years have seen a global rise in the influence of Japan's pop culture, expanding both its fan community and impact.

At the symposium, emphasis was placed on how these passionate fan communities could connect with social contribution initiatives. Discussions centered around a new model of social contribution that involves collaboration among IP holders, event organizers, companies, and local government bodies. A significant aspect of this event was its role in supporting the 'Change for the Blue' project by the Nippon Foundation, aimed at addressing marine plastic waste.

Symposium Insights

To better understand the relationship between pop culture and society, an extensive survey was conducted, involving around 3,500 participants categorized into four groups:
1. General Public
2. Domestic Pop Culture Enthusiasts
3. Cosplayers
4. Overseas Fans of Japanese Pop Culture

In addition to the survey, one-on-one interviews were held with various content creators, such as anime studios, publishers, gaming companies, and character IP holders. The findings revealed that fans deeply engaged with pop culture demonstrated a notable awareness and willingness to participate in social issues, especially concerning marine pollution. This indicates that these fan communities possess the potential to drive positive social change.

However, the survey also indicated that while Japanese IP holders are keenly interested in contributing to society, they tend to proceed with caution to preserve the integrity of their creative works. This delicate balance was a significant discussion point at the symposium, highlighting the need for fans and IP creators to collaborate to find effective ways to address social issues.

Cosplayers emerged as key players in this dialogue, possessing a deep understanding of the narratives and values inherent in their costumes. These individuals can act as bridges between pop culture and social causes, particularly regarding marine waste and other societal challenges. Their passion can facilitate unique forms of social contribution that resonate with wider audiences.

Mr. Tokumaru Oguri, a panelist from the World Cosplay Summit, pointed out that only about 11% of cosplayers have previous experience in social contribution activities, yet approximately 66% expressed a desire to participate in future initiatives. This suggests a significant untapped potential within the cosplay community. As Mr. Oguri remarked, when someone vocalizes a call to action, it can inspire many more to join community activities and contribute positively.
