Stena RoRo Expands E-Flexer Fleet with New Orders from CMI Weihai

In an exciting development for maritime transportation, Stena RoRo has confirmed the order of two next-generation E-Flexer 2.0 RoPax vessels from the China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry (CMI) Weihai shipyard. This significant order was made on behalf of Stena Line and highlights the success of their decade-long partnership, which has already produced multiple vessels under the E-Flexer design. Furthermore, this order includes options for two additional vessels, emphasizing the growth and adaptability of their operations.

Pioneering the Future of Ferry Services

The new E-Flexer 2.0 vessels are part of a series that prioritizes flexibility and cost-efficiency for a broad spectrum of ferry routes worldwide. With a focus on accommodating both passengers and rolling cargo, these vessels are set to raise the bar in ferry transportation. Stena RoRo's Chief Executive Officer, Per Westling, has expressed his conviction that these cutting-edge designs will facilitate completely fossil-free transport solutions in the future, particularly on the route between Gothenburg, Sweden, and Frederikshavn, Denmark, where the new ferries will begin service in 2030.

Advanced Eco-Friendly Technology

A major highlight of the E-Flexer 2.0 design is its future-proofing for battery power operation. Stena RoRo is integrating a diesel-electric propulsion system that includes space for significant battery capacity, aimed to reach as much as 85 MWh. This progressive move not only addresses current energy standards but also prepares the vessels for evolving regulatory requirements related to emissions and sustainability.

In addition to battery capabilities, these vessels will come equipped with state-of-the-art diesel engines capable of operating on a variety of fuels, including biodiesel and potential future use of methanol, further enhancing their adaptability and environmental friendliness.

Celebrating a Decade of Partnership

This latest order marks an important milestone in the ten-year relationship between Stena RoRo and CMI Weihai, which has resulted in the commissioning of 21 vessels to date. The collaboration began in 2016 and has evolved through joint endeavors that value quality and reliability. Stena RoRo has praised CMI Weihai for their commitment to meeting stringent delivery schedules and maintaining high standards, which are crucial for customer satisfaction and confidence in their service.

Specifications of E-Flexer 2.0

The latest E-Flexer vessels, numbered 16 and 17, will span 214 meters in length with a draught of 6.4 meters and a beam measuring 27.8 meters. They boast an impressive capacity of accommodating 1,400 passengers alongside 2,720 lane meters of freight, showcasing their versatility and efficiency as modern ferries.
