Accelerating Research: CAS and Cleveland Clinic Join Forces
In an ambitious move to enhance clinical research, CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society specializing in scientific content and knowledge management, has partnered with the Cleveland Clinic, a leading academic medical center. This collaboration aims to harness the unique expertise, technology, and data capabilities of both organizations to accelerate advancements in the fields of health, wellness, and aging.
During the recent Cleveland Discovery Innovation Forum—a prestigious event focused on innovative research in healthcare and biosciences—both organizations unveiled their strategic collaboration. The primary objective is to drive research efforts surrounding brain health, particularly targeted at developing effective medications for conditions like Alzheimer’s. This focus is underscored by the pressing need for effective treatments in light of the complex nature of these diseases and the current lack of disease-modifying therapies available.
Dr. Lara Jehi, Chief Research Information Officer at the Cleveland Clinic, emphasized the collaboration's potential. She stated, “This unique partnership leverages the Cleveland Clinic’s strengths in biomedical research and clinical care alongside CAS's leadership in scientific data and technology. By combining our expertise, we aspire to generate high-quality medical data, validate scientific models, and integrate research findings to ultimately enhance patient care and chronic disease management.”
To bolster their research capabilities, the initiative plans to utilize the CAS Content Collection™, which is recognized as the most comprehensive curated scientific information source globally. Moreover, advanced technologies like groundbreaking new AI models and quantum computing will play a significant role in exploring new dimensions of research.
Notably, the Cleveland Clinic has partnered with IBM to utilize an IBM Quantum System One—a pioneering quantum computer designed specifically for healthcare research. This powerful computing resource is at the forefront of tackling complex medical challenges. The partners aim to develop and train disease-specific models, starting with Alzheimer’s, focusing on advancing preventive and predictive strategies applicable to various chronic diseases.
CAS President Manuel Guzman expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic, an institution renowned for its research and innovation. He noted, “Considering it typically takes 17 years for a scientific discovery in the lab to transition into an approved test or therapy, we are optimistic that together we can bridge this gap. Guided by our shared goal of improving lives through scientific innovations, we will combine high-quality content, expertise, and advanced technologies to uncover new pathways toward healthier aging and promote positive social and economic impacts.”
The collaboration will also benefit from the Cleveland Innovation District, an initiative that connects the state of Ohio with Cleveland’s health and higher education institutions, aiming to create jobs, expedite research, and train future workforces.
