JOHN SMEDLEY and UTSUWA SHOKEN KAMAKURA Celebrate the Beauty of Pottery

Explore the Intersection of Pottery and Artistry

From March 28 to April 12, 2026, the renowned British knitwear brand, JOHN SMEDLEY, will host a distinctive exhibition titled "Utsuwa to Toki" (Pottery and Time) at its Aoyama store in Tokyo. This collaboration with UTSUWA SHOKEN KAMAKURA highlights the beauty and significance of handcrafted pottery that has endured the test of time.

This unique exhibition will showcase a curated selection of pottery pieces from celebrated artisans, including Atsushi Ogata, Shimao Kiso, Yaku Murakami, and Taka Masu. The theme of this year’s event, "Utsuwa to Toki," invites visitors to appreciate the everyday utility of these pieces, from rice bowls to tea cups and serving dishes, all of which represent a connection to daily life and memory.

Craftsmanship Through Time
The artisans featured in this exhibition have dedicated their practices to creating pottery that not only serves a function but also encapsulates the essence of time. Each piece tells a story, shaped by the hands that crafted it and those that used it. This intricate relationship between the user and the pottery forms a bond that deepens over time, turning these everyday items into cherished keepsakes.

Art in Everyday Life
At the heart of this exhibition is the belief that pottery is not just an object but a companion that enhances our daily experiences. The tactile pleasure of handling well-made pottery, akin to clothing that fits just right, creates a special connection. As these vessels age through use, they develop unique characteristics that reflect the lives they’ve shared, making them irreplaceable parts of our personal histories.

Celebrating Daily Rituals
The showcase will offer a diverse range of pieces:
  • - Atsushi Ogata: His work includes the Araiyama Kohiki rice bowl and the Hibi Kohiki rectangular plate.
  • - Shimao Kiso: Featuring his Oribe 8-inch plate and Oribe shallow bowl, known for their distinctive designs.
  • - Yaku Murakami: Presenting non-traditional items like the straw ash glaze mug and white ash decorative mug.
  • - Taka Masu: Known for his exquisite color painting techniques, including the Color Picture Queen Plate and the Batik Animal Pattern Cup & Saucer.

Event Details
The exhibition will take place at the JOHN SMEDLEY Aoyama store, located at 5-3-10 Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Visitors can immerse themselves in this artistic journey daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The venue is conveniently located just a 4-minute walk from the Omotesando Station, via Exit A5.

A Community of Craft
With a legacy spanning nearly 240 years, JOHN SMEDLEY is celebrated for its timeless design and seasonal palette, perfectly complementing the exquisite craftsmanship of UTSUWA SHOKEN. The exhibition aims to foster a deeper appreciation for both knitwear and pottery, demonstrating how artistry can enhance the mundane aspects of life.

Don't miss the opportunity to witness an intersection of textile and ceramic arts, celebrating the beautiful partnership between daily living and artistic expression. This exhibition promises to be a remarkable journey where pottery transcends its utilitarian function to become part of the family narrative. We invite everyone to come and explore the stories these vessels tell and share in the joy of the simple, beautiful things in life.
