Higashimurayama Black Ramen: A Culinary Delight to Savor
A Celebration of Local Ingredients
The Higashimurayama area is renowned for its rich natural resources, boasting high-quality agricultural products that are cultivated with care. Recognizing this, Men JAPAN Co., Ltd., led by President Atsuhiro Sakata, has developed a new menu item—the Higashimurayama Black Ramen—designed to highlight the region's unique flavors. Scheduled for launch on
August 20, 2025, the ramen will be available at the restaurants ‘Naoi Higashimurayama’ and ‘Gochisoya Pokkura,’ located close to Higashimurayam Station.
This initiative aims not only to provide delicious, locally inspired cuisine but also to promote the idea of eating locally, thereby invigorating the regional economy.
New Eateries on the Map
Gochisoya Pokkura, established in 2008, offers authentic skewers and is one of the beloved establishments in Higashimuraya, located conveniently next to the statue of comedian Ken Shimura. It serves as a family-friendly dining spot, beloved by both locals and visitors alike. In February 2025, they will expand their offering with the opening of the ‘Naoi Higashimurayama’ during lunch hours, featuring dishes made exclusively from local ingredients alongside unique collaborative products with local manufacturers.
Farm-to-Table: Celebrating Local Produce
Higashimurayama is home to numerous farmers' markets and direct sales of agricultural products. Aiming to spread awareness of these fresh offerings, Gochisoya Pokkura actively sources vegetables from the local area, ensuring that diners enjoy the farm-fresh experience.
The Birth of a New Local Specialty
The Higashimurayama Black Ramen draws inspiration from the region's famous dish, black yakisoba, and features a signature black soup that is visually striking and rich in flavor. Priced at
1,150 yen, this dish includes:
- - Generous servings of burdock root, heaped high like the nearby ‘mountains’ offering a satisfying crunch while providing excellent fiber content that complements the broth perfectly.
- - A meticulously crafted soup, simmered for hours to create a base of rich pork broth that exudes deep flavors and umami.
What is Black Yakisoba?
Black yakisoba is a beloved local B-grade gourmet dish, recognized for its unique black sauce that defines its character. At Pokkura, the homemade noodles are a highlight, perfectly balancing the rich sauce, making it an ideal selection after enjoying a variety of izakaya offerings.
Fresh Spinach for a Nutrient Boost
The ramen also incorporates fresh Higashimurayama spinach, revitalizing the spirit with a nod to the beloved cartoon character Popeye, known for his superhuman strength. This nutrient-rich addition provides essential iron and vitamins, catering to health-conscious diners.
