LG Electronics Boosts Global Supply Chain for Antimicrobial Materials

LG Electronics has recently announced the establishment of a new production line in Haiphong, Vietnam, designed to meet the increasing demand for advanced glass powder-based materials in the business-to-business (B2B) sector. This facility will primarily focus on producing innovative materials such as LG PuroTec™ and Easy-Clean Enamel, which are vital for various applications across different industries.

New Production Line Details

The latest production line, which spans 3,200 square meters, is set to produce around 2,000 tons of materials annually. This addition will significantly contribute to LG's overall production capacity, which now stands at a substantial 6,500 tons annually when combined with its existing plant located in Changwon, South Korea. The synergy between the Haiphong and Changwon facilities will ensure a more responsive supply chain, effectively catering to global clients in North America, Europe, and new markets like India and Southeast Asia.

Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

LG's Haiphong plant signifies a leap in production efficiency, employing state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies. Approximately 80% of the production process is fully automated, covering everything from raw material input to packaging and shipping. The focus on automation is intended not only to accelerate production but also to enhance the quality consistency of the materials produced.

The process begins with melting raw materials at high temperatures, followed by cooling and pulverization. A critical highlight of this process is the use of advanced temperature control technology, which ensures uniform temperatures during melting. This precision minimizes the chances of compositional deviations, thus guaranteeing high-quality output. Furthermore, LG has implemented measures to reduce wear on the furnace's refractory lining, ensuring purity in the final product and preventing contamination.

Diverse Applications of Advanced Materials

One of the standout products from this new production line is LG PuroTec™, a material renowned for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties. By incorporating PuroTec™ into various products like plastics, paints, and rubbers, manufacturers can effectively minimize microbial growth that leads to odors and contamination. It's particularly useful in the production of home appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, as well as in sanitary products, food packaging, and medical equipment.

In addition to PuroTec™, the facility produces Easy-Clean Enamel. This material serves as a functional coating that forms a thin, glassy ceramic layer over metal surfaces, making it easy to clean cooking appliances like ovens and microwaves. The enamel's resistance to discoloration and scratching enhances its suitability for hygiene-sensitive kitchen environments.

LG is forward-thinking in its approach to glass powder technology, exploring new applications and compositions that can lead to innovative solutions. Noteworthy examples include 'Marine Glass,' which dissolves in water to enrich marine ecosystems, and 'Mineral Wash,' which facilitates washing without traditional surfactants.

The roots of LG’s innovation in glass powder date back to 1996, and the company now proudly holds over 420 patents in this area. Having officially launched its advanced materials business in 2023, LG continues to expand its global reach, achieving regulatory compliance for antimicrobial materials in both Europe and the United States.

Sales of advanced materials have seen massive growth, doubling each year since their launch.
