Unveiling the Beauty of Traditional Japanese Sweets and Pottery
Musashino Art University’s Craft Design Course is set to host an innovative exhibition titled "Utensils and Traditional Sweets" from May 12 to May 17, 2025, at the Takadodai Campus, followed by a second showcase from June 13 to June 15, 2025, at the Ichigaya Campus. The event celebrates the creativity of 23 dedicated students majoring in ceramics, who crafted unique pottery pieces inspired by the traditional sweets of Toraya, one of Japan's most renowned confectionery shops.
A Celebration of Culinary and Artistic Heritage
This year's exhibition marks the tenth event of its kind and combines the rich history of Japanese confectionery with the artistry of ceramics. Students began their journey in the early autumn of the previous year, gaining insights into the history of wagashi (Japanese sweets) and how these delicacies are crafted. Their creative process spanned from autumn through winter, culminating in the spring with the final touches on their pottery. This hands-on experience helped enhance their understanding of ceramic materials and fostered their imaginative skills, ensuring that each piece reflects their heartfelt dedication. Each student poured their emotions and thoughts into creating their utensils, resulting in a stunning exhibition that showcases their individual artistic expressions.
A First-time Workshop for Middle and High School Students
For the first time ever, the exhibition will feature a special pottery workshop entitled "Let's Dive into Clay and Make Utensils," intended for middle and high school students. This unique opportunity allows youngsters to experience the joy of pottery in a fun and relaxed environment, similar to what first-year university students encounter in their courses. University students specializing in ceramics will guide the sessions, ensuring that even those with no prior experience can confidently participate.
