Book Santa 2025: Bringing Joy to Children in Tough Situations
The Book Santa project, run by the certified NPO Charity Santa, returns this year with the mission of providing new books to children facing difficult circumstances. Starting from September 23, 2025, alongside 1,851 partner bookstores across Japan, this initiative aims to spread joy through the gift of reading.
This charitable endeavor began in 2017, aimed at creating special memories and cherished moments for children. Last year, during the Book Santa 2024 campaign, over 130,843 books were donated to kids, ensuring they have access to new literature that inspires and educates. However, this year's partnership has slightly decreased—down from 1,868 to 1,851 bookstores. This marks the first decline since the project began, a reflection of the ongoing challenges faced by the bookstore industry, where closures have been substantial nationwide.
In light of facing difficulties, the number of participating bookstore corporations has increased from 138 to 150 this year, showcasing a commitment to supporting this charitable cause. With over 100 bookstores newly joining this noble quest, the network continues to grow, facilitating book donations to even more children in need.
