The National Policing Institute Welcomes New Board Members
The National Policing Institute (NPI), a leading organization dedicated to the advancement of law enforcement practices, has recently enriched its Board of Directors with four highly respected figures in the field. This strategic move is aimed at strengthening the organization’s commitment to addressing complex challenges and improving community relations through advanced research and practical solutions.
Among the new members is the Honorable
Alberto R. Gonzales, who served as the 80th Attorney General of the United States during the George W. Bush administration. Gonzales brings a wealth of experience in business law and a strong background in legal service. His impressive career includes roles as the General Counsel to the Governor of Texas, the Texas Secretary of State, and a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court. Notably, he also served in the White House as counsel to the President from 2001 to 2005 and has a strong commitment to public service as a veteran of the Air Force.
Another distinguished addition to the board is
Darrel Stephens, who boasts over 50 years of experience in law enforcement. Having held leadership positions in states including Missouri, Kansas, Florida, Virginia, and North Carolina, Stephens has an extensive history of service. He has previously directed significant organizations such as the Police Executive Research Forum and the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Currently, he co-directs a research institute focusing on policing and security technology at Florida State University, alongside leading his own consulting firm. His contributions to the field have earned him numerous accolades, including NPI's inaugural Patrick V. Murphy Award for Leading Change in Policing.
Rory Steyn, formerly a prominent law enforcement executive in the South African Police Service, also joins NPI’s ranks. Steyn is known for his role as the team leader of President Nelson Mandela’s protection unit and has significant experience in security consulting. He runs NSA Global Security Consultants, specializing in security for major sporting events and various high-profile clients worldwide. In addition to running his consultancy, he has founded a charity and serves on the board of the prestigious Comrades Marathon, the world’s oldest ultra-marathon.
Completing this distinguished quartet is
Dr. Jeremy M. Wilson from Michigan State University, an accomplished educator and scholar who founded the Police Staffing Observatory. Dr. Wilson has a significant track record of research and collaboration with police agencies to tackle various safety challenges. His extensive publication history addresses numerous topics, including police staffing and performance assessments, both crucial for effective policing strategies.
The National Policing Institute, established in 1970, aims to provide law enforcement agencies nationwide with the research and practical solutions needed to navigate contemporary challenges successfully. NPI's board currently comprises experienced individuals from diverse backgrounds, including law enforcement leaders, academics, and community advocates.
Jim Burch, President of NPI, expressed his enthusiasm for the new appointments, stating, "The leaders joining our board today will extend our perspective and help to lead NPI forward in service to one of America's most noble callings – policing. Their combined expertise will bolster our ongoing efforts to support officers and communities across the nation and abroad."
