Johnny Walker Brand Ambassador's New Honor
In a momentous occasion for the Scotch whisky industry, Ayato Kaneko, the brand ambassador for Johnny Walker, was officially recognized as a Keeper of the Quaich at a ceremony held on March 31, 2025, in front of the historic Blair Castle located in the Highlands of Scotland. The event marked the 69th induction into this prestigious organization, which aims to celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to the manufacture, promotion, and preservation of Scotch whisky.
The Keepers of the Quaich is an international membership organization established by the Scotch whisky industry. Being honored requires a profound and long-term commitment to the development of Scotch whisky, requiring recommendations from existing members and a rigorous selection process. Since its inception in 1993, over 3,000 individuals from more than 100 countries have been appointed, with some members achieving the esteemed title of 'Master of the Quaich' for their over ten years of dedicated service to the industry.
Born in San Francisco, USA in 1980, Kaneko spent his early childhood between Japan and Hungary before returning to Japan in 2014, where he began working as a brand ambassador for Johnny Walker. His dedication has led him to conduct seminars and events across Japan, sharing the enthralling stories behind Johnny Walker and various single malt brands. He regularly visits distilleries in Scotland, learning from the world’s largest collection of distilleries owned by the company, deepening his knowledge and understanding of whisky while promoting whisky culture.
Kaneko’s recent appointment as a Keeper of the Quaich stands as a testament to his impactful activities within the Scotch whisky sector. With his steadfast commitment, the expectation is for Kaneko to continue to contribute to the growth of both Scotch whisky and the Johnny Walker brand.
Kaneko's Reflection on His Appointment
In expressing his gratitude for this significant honor, Kaneko remarked, “I am deeply privileged to be appointed as a Keeper of the Quaich, a title steeped in the long-standing traditions of the Scotch whisky industry. As a brand ambassador for Johnny Walker, which operates on the principle of 'KEEP WALKING,' I have continually strived to share the allure of whisky throughout Japan. This appointment will motivate me even more to serve as a bridge between Scotland and Japan, conveying the magnificent culture and heritage of Scotch whisky to a broader audience. I will persist in my passion and commitment, never forgetting my gratitude towards everyone involved in the whisky industry.”
Founded in 1820, Johnny Walker's story began with John Walker, who opened a small grocery store selling spices and teas. Inspired by blending these elements, Walker ventured into whisky blending at a time when no quality standard was established. His commitment to ensuring high-quality, consistent whisky supply, blended for deep and rich flavors, has led Johnny Walker to become a beloved brand for over 200 years, recognized as the number one Scotch whisky brand worldwide according to IMPACT DATABANK 2024 data.
