The Essence of Kyuncho-me
Founded by
Eri Honma and
Nabuchi, Kyuncho-me began its journey post the Great East Japan Earthquake, focusing on themes that critique traditional human-centric views of existence. The artists are committed to exploring imaginative and humorous expressions of humanity's relationship with nature, beings, and the concept of love. Each of their works speaks volumes of their eternal gaze towards our planet, urging for love and peace.
In
'Ghost in the Sea', the haunting visuals depict plastic shopping bags drifting aimlessly in the ocean, symbolizing the ecological dilemma brought on by manmade materials in our natural world. The stark contrast between humanity's artistic creations and the artifice of plastic serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing conflict between us and the environment. The film poignantly illustrates our complicated relationship with nature, showcasing both the beauty and the sorrow of plastic's enduring presence in our oceans.
Celebrating Ambiguity
The exhibition’s titular piece,
'A Bouquet for an Ambiguous Earth', presents a beautifully crafted globe-shaped vase that reflects the diverse interpretations of world maps drawn from the memories of people around the globe. These maps, often vague and imprecise, encourage visitors not to judge the inaccuracy but rather to embrace and celebrate the imperfections that exist within our understanding of the world. This practice could be viewed as a fundamental approach to easing tensions rooted in binary oppositions, reminding us of the rich tapestry of perspectives that exist.
Through their artwork, the artists invite attendees to re-examine their connections to the Earth and the ambiguity surrounding it. By cherishing the uncertain forms that may exist in someone else’s mind, they hope to cultivate compassion for both our own and others' complexities. Their works challenge us to acknowledge what remains longer than our lifetimes – our lasting responsibility for our planet and each other’s well-being.
Words from the Artists
In a recent statement, the artists articulated the importance of embracing ambiguity as an integral part of love and peace. They propose that accepting the nuances of life allows for a radical rethinking of our morals and relationships, moving away from rigid binaries of right and wrong. They express a desire to bless not only their own uncertainties but also the ambiguities the rest of us carry.
As visitors navigate through the exhibition, they're encouraged to find joy and meaning in forms that deviate from their own sense of normalcy. The aim is simple yet profound – we can all engage in practices of blessing and compassion for ourselves and one another.
