iDEAL Semiconductor Partners with Polar to Launch SuperQ™ Power Devices

iDEAL Semiconductor Partners with Polar Semiconductor for SuperQ™ Production

In a significant move for the semiconductor industry, iDEAL Semiconductor has announced that its cutting-edge SuperQ™ silicon power devices are now officially in production at Polar Semiconductor. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for both companies, as they harness advanced manufacturing capabilities to bring innovative technology to various applications.

SuperQ™ represents a groundbreaking development in silicon MOSFET architecture, introducing the first major innovation in over 25 years. Utilizing a patented asymmetrical RESURF structure, SuperQ™ dramatically reduces conduction and switching losses, featuring a resistance that is up to 2.7 times lower compared to traditional silicon solutions. Furthermore, the technology cuts switching losses by as much as 2.1 times when compared to competing devices, setting a new standard in power efficiency.

"Polar is regarded as one of the premier power semiconductor foundries in the world," stated Mark Granahan, CEO and co-founder of iDEAL Semiconductor. He emphasized that Polar’s extensive experience and commitment to high-voltage processes make them an ideal partner as iDEAL progresses on its SuperQ roadmap.

Located in Bloomington, Minnesota, Polar Semiconductor operates a high-volume 200mm manufacturing facility and is the only majority U.S.-owned foundry with specialized expertise in high-voltage power and sensor technologies. With a decades-long history in automotive production and IATF 16949 certification, Polar is dedicated to maintaining quality through zero-defect manufacturing practices.

The initial products from iDEAL—150 V and 200 V MOSFETs—were recently announced and are currently being produced by Polar, with plans to introduce 300 V and 400 V devices in the near future. Reflecting on their growth strategy, Polar Semiconductor is expanding its facilities to double manufacturing capacity and to invest in next-generation technologies, thus supporting strategic partnerships like iDEAL’s.

"Together, we are embarking on a crucial journey towards enhanced power efficiency and performance, ensuring an adaptable and secure manufacturing platform," added Surya Iyer, President and COO of Polar Semiconductor. This collaboration aims at unleashing the full potential of the SuperQ technology, designed for various high-performance applications. These include industrial automation, automotive electrification, AI datacenters, renewable energy systems, telecom infrastructure, and consumer power systems.

SuperQ™ is engineered to deliver ultra-low conduction and switching losses while retaining the inherent reliability of silicon, functioning effectively at junction temperatures up to 175°C. iDEAL Semiconductor is committed to pushing silicon technology boundaries, ensuring their power devices contribute to energy efficiency across essential sectors.
