The Fusion of Art and Technology at SIGGRAPH 2025
The 52nd annual SIGGRAPH conference, set for August 10-14, 2025, in Vancouver, aims to reinforce its position as a leading platform for artistic innovation and digital research. With its centerpiece programs, the Art Gallery and Art Papers, this event showcases how emerging technology is redefining our understanding of nature, identity, and reality.
Curated under the theme "Connecting Nature, Art, and Technology," the Art Gallery will feature twelve intriguing works that challenge conventional boundaries between natural systems and digital expression. The selected pieces include interactive and immersive installations that reflect a heightened ecological consciousness and an interdisciplinary approach to creation.
Francesca Franco, the Art Gallery Chair, emphasizes the significance of this year’s collection, stating, "The gallery has always served as a hub for creativity. We celebrate artists leveraging technology not only for stunning sensory outputs but also for reflection on environmental and human connectivity."
Among the highlighted works is "Quantum Tango Vancouver, London, Milan" by Ernest Edmonds, which establishes real-time connections between audiences across multiple cities, allowing viewers to become co-creators in a shared digital space through dynamic visuals. Another notable piece, "How to Find the Soul of a Sailor" by Kasia Molga, utilizes AI to explore themes of digital existence and speculative futures, drawing inspiration from her father's maritime journals. Laura Cinti's work, "AI in The Sky," employs drone technology to search for a lost female plant, weaving together concepts of extinction, cloning, and data acquisition.
The exhibition is designed not only for in-person engagement but also aims for global interaction, with audience participation being vital. Franco notes, "Our installations invite not just onsite visitors but also engage remote audiences, fostering a global dialogue that transcends the gallery. This interaction cultivates a deeper emotional connection between individuals and the environment."
Concurrently, the Art Papers program will delve into themes surrounding the evolution of reality in a world dominated by digital interactions. Titled "The Future of Reality Post-Truths, Digital Twins, and Doppelgängers," the program will showcase seventeen juried papers that explore issues surrounding AI, virtual embodiment, and innovative creativity in the digital arts. Victoria Szabo, Art Papers Chair, highlights the importance of dialogue between media artists, theorists, and technologists, stating, "This program fosters meaningful discussions that critically analyze the creative use of new technologies and their broader social implications."
Among the standout contributions to the Art Papers is "Algorithmic Miner Humanity in Service – An AI-Driven VR Journey Into Machine Logic" by Jia Sun, Zheng Wei, and Pan Hui, presenting users with a VR experience that sheds light on the overlooked ethical dimensions of AI labor. Another unique piece, "PoeSpin A Human-AI Dance to Poetry System for Movement-Based Verse Generation" by Yihua Li and collaborators, explores the translation of dance into poetry through AI, challenging perceptions of creativity and performance. Additionally, "wave2weave A Procedural Weave Data Generation" merges algorithmic concepts with traditional textile artistry, creating intricate Jacquard weavings that exemplify the intersection of heritage and modern technology.
The Art Gallery and Art Papers at SIGGRAPH 2025 together provide a multi-sensory and cross-disciplinary platform for exploring important ideas at the confluence of art and technology. The scheduling of artist discussions alongside paper presentations aims to create a rich environment of engagement across various forms of practice and inquiry. Franco articulates the intent behind this synergy: "We see this as two sides of the same coin. While the gallery immerses in sensory experiences, the papers contribute critical discourse for a comprehensive understanding of the evolving relationship between art and technology."
