In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, First Student, a frontrunner in North America's student transport services, has partnered with Con Edison to revolutionize electric school bus infrastructure in New York City. On September 15, 2026, they unveiled the successful first phase of their innovative electric school bus project tailored for the NYC Department of Education, highlighting a compelling combination of electric buses, the cutting-edge First Charge™ infrastructure, and bi-directional charging technology.

By eliminating the need for standard underground trenching, the installation costs were reduced by 13%, allowing for faster implementation without the extensive disruptions common in dense urban ecosystems. This innovative approach addresses the challenges typically associated with construction projects in metropolitan settings like New York City.

"Con Edison is dedicated to ensuring that our customers find the transition to electric vehicles affordable and practical," Vicki Kuo, Senior Vice President of Customer Energy Solutions at Con Edison, stated. By removing the requirement to conceal service lines for chargers, First Student benefits from lowered initial costs, an example that other fleet operators are encouraged to adopt. The transition from traditional, fossil fuel-powered buses to environmentally-friendly electric buses signifies a major step toward enhanced sustainability in the region.

Financial backing for this project came from both Con Edison and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). This included funding for electric bus purchases through NYSERDA's School Bus Incentive Program, showcasing a robust public-private collaboration directed towards groundbreaking environmental goals. In total, six bus vouchers were awarded alongside support for four retrofitted vehicles, significantly advancing New York's electric transportation initiatives.

An innovative aspect of the project involves the exploration of energy cost reduction strategies for the electric buses. By leveraging advanced load management software, the buses charge during off-peak hours—when energy costs are lower—reducing complexity and optimizing overall energy use. This strategy not only makes economic sense but also supports the project's sustainability goals.

In moving forward, First Student has outlined plans to deploy an additional 40 electric school buses to enhance services for New York City's Department of Education. Furthermore, the company is exploring supplementary strategies at its Brooklyn facilities, including heightened use of solar energy and the establishment of a smart energy hub to diversify their energy portfolio.

NYSERDA's involvement highlights support for sustainable initiatives, as President and CEO Doreen M. As of the 2025-26 school year, First Student operated around 490 electric school buses, with an additional 550 units on order, demonstrating a significant commitment to transitioning the school bus sector towards electrification.
