Communities In Schools Unveils New National Alumni Advisory Council

Communities In Schools (CIS) has announced the formation of its National Alumni Advisory Council, featuring a diverse group of ten alumni. This initiative aims to strengthen national alumni engagement and leverage the unique insights of former CIS students to enhance programs and initiatives. The council members are tasked with providing valuable feedback to improve alumni programs, foster connections within the alumni network, and identify opportunities for leadership and professional growth.

The council's significance lies in the lived experiences of its members. Each of them has a personal journey that reflects the mission of CIS - to support students in overcoming barriers to success. Accordingly, their firsthand insights into CIS programs will be pivotal in tailoring initiatives that resonate with alumni and current students alike.

The newly inducted council members are:
1. Ariana Ellis, CIS of Atlanta
2. Leanna Esquivel, CIS of Tacoma
3. J'Niyah Freeman, CIS of Georgia
4. Bryan Harris, CIS of Los Angeles
5. Amanye Jinwright, CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg
6. James Leap, CIS of Eastern Pennsylvania
7. Kaylee Main-Gomez, CIS of Nevada
8. Miracle Mozzee, CIS of South Carolina
9. James Rivera, CIS of East Texas
10. Kuniya Young, CIS of Nation's Capital

Cecilia Lee, Principal of Alumni Relations at the CIS National Office, expressed excitement about the diversity of perspectives the council members bring, emphasizing their ability to guide and strengthen the organization's efforts. The council is already taking steps to make a difference; earlier this month, several members attended significant conferences in Washington, D.C., such as the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Leadership Conference and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Annual Legislative Conference.

During these conferences, alumni participated in sessions designed to provide networking opportunities with national leaders engaged in advancing educational and economic opportunities. Engaging with professionals and policymakers emphasized the importance of civic participation and provided a platform to explore how their personal experiences as CIS students can inspire future generations.

Rey Saldaña, President and CEO of CIS National Office, highlighted the critical role of alumni in the organization's mission, stating, "One of the greatest measures of our impact is seeing former students return as leaders." He welcomed council members and expressed gratitude for their contributions. The participation in national leadership experiences underscores CIS's commitment to empowering its alumni to become effective community and civic leaders.

The inaugural meeting of the council is set to take place in Memphis, Tennessee, from September 24-27. This gathering will serve as a platform for council members to deepen relationships and align on shared goals. Together, they will scrutinize CIS's broader alumni strategy and work collectively to augment alumni engagement across the nation.
