Explore the Allure of Canary Islands Wine in Tokyo
On July 15, 2025, the culinary delight of the Canary Islands will be showcased at the ANA Intercontinental Hotel Tokyo through a wine event organized by PROEXCA, the international business promotion agency for the Canary Islands. This event, titled "Exploring the Allure of Canary Islands Wine – Seminar & B2B Networking," is set to open its doors to industry professionals, providing them with the opportunity to discover the unique charm and economic potential of this region as highlighted in the new international strategy, "Canarias, your best self."
The event will present a selection of wines from 10 Denominations of Origin (D.O.) in the Canary Islands, allowing attendees to participate in tastings, seminars led by experts, and direct interactions with local producers. As participants immerse themselves in the diverse terroir of the Canary Islands, they will gain insights into how the volcanic soils and varied climates contribute to the production of wine with distinct characteristics, setting them apart from the wines of mainland Spain. Recently, these wines have been gaining international acclaim, and the event aims to introduce Canary Islands wines into the Japanese market while creating new business opportunities in the wine industry.
The Unique Terroir of the Canary Islands
The volcanic landscapes of the Canary Islands have fostered a rich and fertile environment, creating a complex geological mosaic. With around 319 wineries and over 8,000 grape growers, the region boasts an annual production exceeding 10 million liters. Notably, its resilience against phylloxera has allowed much to remain unique, including:
- - Unrooted Planting: Unlike many regions where grapevines are grafted onto rootstocks, the Canary Islands allow vines to be planted directly into the soil, encouraging a natural root system.
- - Protection of Ancient Varietals: This practice enables the preservation of ancient grape varieties and century-old vines, lending a distinctive character to Canary Islands wines.
