Spring is Back: The Home Depot Reveals Must-Do Projects This Season
As the first official day of spring arrives, many homeowners and renters are ready to roll up their sleeves and dive into seasonal projects. According to a recent survey conducted by Reputation Leaders for The Home Depot, a staggering 64% of respondents believe that spring truly begins when they start their first home project. These projects typically kick off with the traditional spring cleaning, making it a popular starting point for many households across the country.
In the survey, outdoor and indoor cleaning tasks took the spotlight, with activities such as window washing, cleaning grills, and garden weeding marking the arrival of warmer weather. It demonstrates a clear intention among homeowners to refresh their living spaces as the new season unfolds.
Emphasizing the Mental Health Benefits of Spring Cleaning
The findings of The Home Depot’s spring project report, titled
What Are You Working On?, shed light on the emotional benefits of spring cleaning. An impressive 65% of homeowners reported that they look forward to this annual ritual, with 85% acknowledging its positive impact on their mental health. This sense of accomplishment after completing the tasks fuels their commitment to creating a clean and organized environment.
Going Cordless: The Preferred Choice for Tools
The survey highlighted an interesting trend in tool preferences. Among those intending to use electric tools this spring, 76% favored cordless options over wired varieties. This inclination suggests a growing demand for convenience and efficiency in tackling various home improvement tasks. From mowing the lawn to constructing decks, cordless tools are becoming an essential part of the DIY toolkit.
Planting Happiness: Gardening as a Source of Joy
Gardening emerged as a core focus for many respondents. An optimistic 68% indicated that gardening provides them with happiness, while 65% believe it enhances their overall wellness. Nearly half of the participants identified themselves as “plant parents,” reflecting a deep connection to their greenery. Furthermore, 52% of those planning gardening projects expressed an intent to add or renew mulch in their flower beds, establishing it as one of the most common gardening tasks for 2025.
Grilling: A Year-Round Activity
The arrival of warm weather also ignites a passion for grilling. The survey revealed that 62% of homeowners do not limit grilling to just the spring, with many opting to fire up their grills throughout the year, even in the winter holidays. As one in five respondents indicated they would grill more often if it meant spending time with friends and family, the grill continues to serve as a focal point for social gatherings.
Billy Bastek, executive vice president of merchandising at The Home Depot, states, “Spring is a season of renewal, and we are here to support our customers in confidently tackling their projects. A significant 76% of those surveyed believe that spring projects help alleviate 'spring fever,' so we are excited to provide the tools, products, and professional advice needed to refresh homes and gardens.”

To uncover the spring projects intended by consumers in 2025, The Home Depot commissioned the
What Are You Working On? report. In collaboration with independent research firm Reputation Leaders, the company surveyed 5,000 U.S. adults over the age of 21, who were either homeowners or renters and had undertaken a spring cleaning or improvement project in the past year. The survey sampled respondents evenly from all 50 U.S. states, with 100 adults per state, consisting of 79% homeowners and 21% renters, and a demographic mix of 54% men and 46% women.
