Transforming Job Hunting for Students
In an era where job hunting significantly overwhelms students, a groundbreaking project has emerged. Shukatsu 3.0 is launching an initiative focused on the collective efforts of students and companies to reshape the new graduate recruitment landscape. This initiative coincides with April Dream, a movement aimed at promoting dreams and aspirations on April 1st.
The Current State of Job Hunting
The contemporary job market has raised pressing questions about whether students are genuinely respected during the hiring process. With the rise of a seller's market, companies are increasingly engaged in fierce competition for talent. This has led to lengthy and early selection processes becoming the norm, as businesses scramble for early summer internship slots and even target undergraduates from their first year.
As a consequence, job hunting has shifted from a mutual understanding between students and companies to a race for recruitment success. Students often find themselves caught in a cycle of crafting elaborate entry sheets while companies resort to superficial assessments merely for efficiency’s sake.
Why Change is Needed Now
Despite the clear challenges in recruitment practices, the fundamental flaws of new graduate hiring have persisted for decades. Evaluations of candidates and the proliferation of recruitment rules have historically been determined by companies and related organizations. Unfortunately, as companies pursue their goals amidst tightening competition, addressing student burdens and optimizing the entire market remains a daunting task.
Even for companies aware of these issues, adhering to strict recruitment standards risks falling behind competitors and missing out on top talent. Consequently, change at an individual company level tends to be limited.
However, the rapid integration of online interviews and events—spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic—has shown that shifts in external circumstances can lead to significant changes in hiring practices. Many HR departments have expressed a desire to move away from outdated, burdensome traditions, indicating a strong openness to change.
Students Taking Initiative for Change
Recognizing the necessity for improvement, Shukatsu 3.0 has launched a project tentatively titled, “Together We Change Job Hunting.” This initiative will empower students to take action in advocating for a reform in hiring practices, particularly targeting the graduating cohort of 2028 onwards.
Central to this project is the introduction of the “Job Hunting Profile Sheet (PS),” designed to eliminate unnecessary paperwork in job applications. The PS will function similarly to a My Number card, consolidating students' achievements and experiences into a standardized format that can be easily accessed and shared with prospective employers. This will drastically reduce the administrative burdens on students while allowing companies to obtain critical information without redundant documentation.
Students will engage in this initiative by registering for the PS, signaling their desire to rectify inefficient and redundant hiring processes. The collection of sufficient student data will create an environment where companies can access essential information without requiring additional document submissions. This aligns with both student convenience and corporate efficiency, paving the way for the PS to evolve into a standard infrastructure in recruitment.
A Commitment to Long-term Change
Shukatsu 3.0 emphasizes that this tool is not designed for the immediate maximization of profits but is instead aimed at establishing a framework to address structural issues within the new graduate recruitment market. Our pricing reflects the minimum necessary to sustain operations while maintaining our commitment to long-term market improvement over immediate returns.
To enhance the job market for new graduates, it is crucial to invest time and effort into nurturing a fruitful environment rather than pursuing short-term gains. We believe that structures require careful cultivation to yield results three to five years down the line. Shukatsu 3.0 is dedicated to fulfilling this role, recognizing the importance of fostering a sustainable recruitment market that effectively channels talented individuals to the right companies.
A Call to Action for Companies and Students
For this initiative to succeed, understanding and participation from both companies and students are essential. We invite as many businesses and students as possible to engage in this dialogue, collectively reassessing recruitment practices to foster a rational environment beneficial to all parties involved. Through this collaboration, we can realize a sustainable recruitment market where qualified candidates are rightfully matched with the companies they deserve.
