Shinjuku Kabukicho Shunga Exhibition - A New Chapter Begins
On September 2, 2025, the much-anticipated second phase of the Shinjuku Kabukicho Shunga Exhibition will commence, introducing a freshly curated collection of approximately 30 new pieces of art from the Edo period. This new selection promises to offer a unique insight into the captivating world of shunga (spring pictures), enticing art lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike to experience the allure of these iconic works of art anew.
The Essence of the Shunga Exhibition
The Shinjuku Kabukicho Shunga Exhibition is a remarkable presentation featuring over 150 spring paintings by renowned Edo period artists such as Hishikawa Moronobu, Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsushika Hokusai, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. This rare collection is curated by Uraaka Mitsuru, a prominent figure and leading collector of shunga. Uraaka is best known for his contributions to the field of ukiyo-e; he played a pivotal role as a contributor and sponsor for the iconic Shunga exhibition at the British Museum in London in 2013, as well as being instrumental in organizing Japan's first dedicated shunga exhibition at the Eisei Bunko in Tokyo in 2015, which drew in around 210,000 visitors over three months.
The Venue: A Cultural Highlight
The exhibition is proudly hosted at the Shinjuku Kabukicho Noh Theatre, managed by Smappa! Group. Under the artistic direction of Yasutaka Hayashi, also known as Chim↑Pom, the exhibition will leverage the entire space of the noh stage, including the performance area, bridge, and audience seating, to create a dynamic and immersive viewing experience. Additionally, a second venue hosted by Smappa! Group will also feature some of the exhibits alongside an array of merchandise, making it an event that celebrates the spirit of Kabukicho in its entirety.
Special Events to Enhance Your Experience
