Paralyzed Veterans of America Hosts Annual Wheelchair Rugby Invitational in Louisville

The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) has wrapped up its ninth annual Wheelchair Rugby Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky, solidifying its position as the largest adaptive rugby event in the United States. Held over three intense days, the tournament featured 18 teams from across the nation competing in various divisions for the coveted Code of Honor Cup.

The event has grown significantly since its inception and now attracts top-tier athletes, including renowned Paralympians like Chris Fleace and Travis Baker. Each division showcased thrilling matches, culminating in a competitive atmosphere that highlights the skill and determination of the participating veterans. Team WWAR Generals emerged victorious in Division I, Shepherd Smash took home the honors in Division II, and the Northeast Passage Wildcats claimed victory in Division III.

Fabio Villarroel, Senior Director of PVA Sports and Recreation, expressed his pride in the event, stating, "PVA's Rugby Invitational continues to attract and unite exceptional veteran athletes from across the nation. We are incredibly proud of the growth of this event, and we look forward to many years of raising the caliber of competition and empowering all veteran athletes facing mobility challenges to play wheelchair rugby."

Since its establishment in 2018, the Wheelchair Rugby Invitational aims to expand PVA's adaptive sports programs while promoting awareness for wheelchair rugby. It plays a crucial role in inspiring the broader disability community to engage in adaptive sports. Beyond the competition, the event enriches the lives of veterans living with spinal cord injuries and related diseases such as MS and ALS, aiding them in reclaiming their independence and building confidence.

The PVA Sports and Recreation Department organized the event, which facilitates over 60 virtual and in-person adaptive sports and recreational opportunities throughout the year, serving thousands of veterans nationwide. Activities include bass fishing, yoga, whitewater rafting, paracycling, and much more. Moreover, PVA acknowledges the generous support of Coloplast, which plays a vital role in improving access to adaptive sports for veterans with disabilities. By facilitating such events and activities, PVA remains committed to reducing barriers and promoting inclusivity in sports for all veterans.
