Universal's Latest Theme Park Weaves Floating Solar Into Eco-Friendly Blueprint

Universal's Integration of Floating Solar into Epic Universe

Universal Orlando Resort has embarked on an ambitious journey towards sustainability with the unveiling of its new theme park, Epic Universe. A significant aspect of this initiative is the deployment of a floating photovoltaic (PV) system developed by D3Energy, a leading U.S. floating solar developer.

Earlier this year, the 1.4 MW floating solar system was energized, contributing to a remarkable renewable energy strategy that encompasses three solar installations at the theme park, totaling 3.7 MW. Together, these solar systems are projected to generate over 6.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, providing enough power to support more than 900 homes. This initiative not only shines a light on renewable energy but also positions Epic Universe as the first theme park to receive LEED Platinum certification under the LEED for Communities Plan and Design.

One of the standout features of this floating solar setup is its ability to interface with electric transportation. The energy harvested is stored in batteries throughout the day and later utilized to recharge Universal's electric bus fleet at night, showcasing a seamless integration of clean energy technologies within the park's operations. This innovative approach emphasizes how multiple sustainable solutions can work symbiotically to create a holistic energy framework.

Stetson Tchividjian, the Managing Director at D3Energy, expressed his pride in collaborating with Universal Orlando for a second floating solar project, emphasizing how Universal sets a benchmark for sustainability in the theme park industry. The partnership is not only pivotal for the current project but also highlights the potential for floating solar to maximize existing infrastructure without requiring additional land.

The floating solar system represents a significant step forward in employing advanced technologies that align with global efforts toward sustainability and clean energy. D3Energy, which has pioneered many floating solar projects across the United States, employs Hydrelio® technology from Ciel Terre for both floating systems at Universal, ensuring reliability and efficiency.

This project reflects a broader trend where floating solar technologies are increasingly acknowledged for their benefits, such as enhancing renewable energy generation while occupying minimal land space. Universal's Epic Universe is not just another theme park; it serves as a beacon of innovation in the drive towards environmental responsibility.

As the world moves toward a more sustainable future, initiatives like those at Universal Disney emphasize the importance of integrating renewable energy across various sectors, especially in large-scale recreational facilities. This effort not only reduces carbon footprints but also educates visitors about the importance of sustainable practices.

With more developments like this on the horizon, D3Energy and Universal Orlando Resort exemplify how strategic partnerships can yield significant advancements in renewable energy deployment within renowned recreational spots like Epic Universe. Visitors to this innovative theme park can revel in the magic of entertainment while also contributing to a more sustainable world.

Overall, the integration of floating solar energy solutions illustrates the potential benefits not just for theme parks but for numerous sectors looking to reduce their environmental impact. In synchronizing renewable energy with entertainment, Universal is setting a high standard for theme parks worldwide to follow. The journey towards sustainability continues as technology and creativity align toward a greener future for all of us.
