The Final Performance of the 19th Class at the New National Theatre: Pillars of Society

New National Theatre's 19th Class Graduation Performance: 'Pillars of Society'

The New National Theatre in Tokyo will host the graduation performance of its 19th drama training class with the play 'Pillars of Society' by the renowned playwright, Henrik Ibsen. The performances are scheduled from February 10 to 15, 2026, at the theatre's Small Theatre. This production marks a significant occasion as it revisits a classic Ibsen work that has been a staple in theatrical studies.

Overview of 'Pillars of Society'

Written by the father of modern drama, Henrik Ibsen, 'Pillars of Society' is one of his early realist works that critically examines the society and its moral dilemmas. The story is set in a small Norwegian coastal town and revolves around Karsten Bernick, a powerful businessman who holds the position of consul. The narrative explores his relationships with his family, including his wife Betty and son Olaf, as well as the complex dynamics between him and the townsfolk regarding a railway development project. Central to this story is the theme of past mistakes and the ethical responsibilities of leadership in a capitalist society, which resonates strongly with contemporary issues of freedom and dignity.

This marks the second staging of Ibsen's work since the 13th year's class performed it in 2020 with an updated translation by Anne Rande Petters. The current production is directed by Keiko Miyata, the head of the drama training school, who is supported by staff members who have continued from the previous production, ensuring a deeper and enriched portrayal of this intricate tale.

The Training Journey of the 19th Class

The graduates of the 2023 intake have recently garnered attention with their performances of 'Shonen Koden-tai 1945' in August, a spoken drama that was the first in four years, and the emotionally charged production 'The Story of the Sewing Machine from Tommy's Skirt' in November. Over the course of three years, they have undergone rigorous training that has included foundational learning and collaboration with leading directors, preparing them for this ultimate graduation performance. Anticipation builds as audiences look forward to what promises to be a remarkable culmination of their efforts and growth.

Story Synopsis

Set in a quaint Norwegian harbor town, Karsten Bernick is viewed as a pillar of society along with his family unit, showcasing a seemingly perfect life. However, complications arise as he embarks on a railway construction project with local merchants, coinciding with the return of his wife Betty's brother, Johan, and his half-sister Rona, who left the town fifteen years prior due to an event that still looms in the air. Past transgressions resurface at a critical juncture, complicating Bernick's present life and threatening to unravel the façade of his respected existence. The secrets entwined with the railway venture and Bernick’s earlier mistakes become central themes as the plot unfolds.
