IDC Predicts Dramatic Increase in OCP-Aligned Infrastructure Spending by 2029
The Open Compute Project (OCP) Foundation recently announced a staggering revision by IDC regarding global spending on OCP-compliant IT equipment. A study conducted by IDC revealed that annual expenditure is expected to surge to approximately
$800 billion by 2029, a remarkable increase from a previous estimate of
$295 billion for the same year. This equates to a transformative growth factor of about
2.7 times. Moreover, projections indicate that the spending could escalate further to
$892 billion by 2030, with OCP-compliant IT gear accounting for roughly
51% of all infrastructure-related expenditures analyzed in the study.
The IDC Market Impact Study, conducted on an annual basis under the auspices of the OCP Foundation, seeks to evaluate the influence of OCP-compatible hardware on the broader market. This year’s findings suggest a robust increase in investments directed towards artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, reflecting the rapidly evolving landscape of technology and its demands on IT frameworks. According to
Cliff Grossner, Ph.D., Director of Innovation at OCP, “AI is reshaping the requirements placed upon infrastructure, and these findings underscore the rising significance of open projects in meeting this demand.” He further emphasized the collaboration among community members to tackle comprehensive data center challenges, ranging from semiconductors and servers to cooling and network power.
The push for
AI investments is a significant driver behind the anticipated growth in infrastructure spending. IDC projects that expenditures on OCP-aligned IT equipment will soar from approximately
$154 billion in 2025 to
$892 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of around
42%.
Major Insights from the IDC Study
- - The projected annual expenditure of $800 billion in 2029 marks a dramatic rise from earlier estimates.
- - By 2030, annual spending is forecasted to reach $892 billion, with $814 billion allocated specifically for servers.
- - OCP-compliant infrastructure is anticipated to account for around 51% of the expenditures within measured infrastructure categories by 2030.
- - Approximately $628 billion of the spending in 2030 is expected to be related to AI infrastructure aligned with OCP standards, making up about 70% of the overall estimated spending total.
IDC also notes the growth of a diverse ecosystem of solution providers and the availability of openly available projects as key factors contributing to the increased adoption of OCP-compliant hardware. This equipment is leveraged not only by formal members of OCP but also by various organizations worldwide that access and implement these innovative projects.
Open Infrastructure Evolution
The findings affirm the critical nature of an expanded vision for the OCP open data center ecosystem, incorporating interconnected AI infrastructure requirements ranging from
semiconductors to power grids. Over the past year, OCP community members have been developing enhanced power-efficient server rack designs, liquid cooling solutions, AI-based Ethernet networking, and open specifications for chiplets. These infrastructural advancements also encompass power distribution innovations, energy storage developments, and the synchronization of data centers with power networks.
A strategic initiative from the OCP Foundation, dubbed
Open Data Centers for AI, integrates projects focusing on energy supply, cooling systems, and management strategies. The OCP's Energy Project fosters collaboration on energy generation and storage, while the
AI Computational Continuum Project facilitates the deployment of technologies beyond hyperscale environments, accommodating enterprise systems and regional data centers.
As AI infrastructure continues to grow, OCP aims to focus on accommodating diverse AI chip architectures, enhancing design coordination across entire data centers, and creating open modular components that organizations can deploy across various environments.
The IDC Market Impact Study 2026 evaluates global spending on IT equipment compliant with OCP standards, which includes budgets for servers, external storage systems, switches, IT cabinets, power and cooling systems, operational hardware, and peripheral devices. The data presented reflects annual expenditures, while percentage values have been rounded for clarity.
