Toyo Glass Launches Japan's First Large-Scale Oxygen Combustion Melting Furnace for Glass Production

A Revolutionary Step in Glass Production

On March 31, 2026, Toyo Glass Corporation, a subsidiary of Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, officially launched its large-scale melting furnace for glass bottles at its Chiba Factory in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first of its kind in Japan employing an oxygen combustion method.

What Is the Oxygen Combustion Method?

The oxygen combustion technique substitutes traditional air combustion with high-concentration oxygen, enabling more efficient burning by eliminating nitrogen as a byproduct. This transformation increases heat transfer efficiency to the glass, allowing Toyo Glass to maintain its production levels while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the melting furnace by approximately 20% compared to conventional methods.

Additionally, this advancement means fewer energy-intensive heat-retaining bricks are required, promoting a streamlined manufacturing process that emphasizes resource conservation and carbon reduction. By minimizing environmental impact, Toyo Glass is dedicated to delivering environmentally responsible products that contribute to clients' decarbonization ambitions.

Background of the Initiative

The glass bottle industry has faced challenges associated with high energy consumption and GHG emissions tied to melting furnaces. Toyo Glass has long pursued strategies related to energy efficiency and recycling to achieve a balance between business operations and environmental protection. The journey toward the implementation of the oxygen combustion method began in May 2024, recognized as a vital strategy for energy savings and the realization of a decarbonized society. After two years of preparation and construction, the facility is now operational.

Future Prospects

Toyo Glass anticipates that its pioneering oxygen combustion method will serve as a model for the decarbonization within the glass bottle industry. Following this initiative, the company plans to continue incorporating cutting-edge technologies and adopting diverse approaches to reduce environmental impacts. In collaboration with customers, suppliers, and local communities, Toyo Glass aims to advance the provision and production of eco-friendly glass bottles, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
