Georgia-Pacific and Trackonomy Partnership: Ensuring Timely Plywood Deliveries
As the hurricane season approaches, effective preparation is critical, particularly in regions prone to intense storms. Recognizing the urgency of supply availability,
Georgia-Pacific (GP) has joined forces with
Trackonomy to improve the delivery process of plywood shipments, ensuring that retailers can meet surging demand effectively. By integrating
Trackonomy's SmartTape technology into plywood shipments, GP enhances real-time tracking capabilities, enabling retailers like
Home Depot and
Lowe's to receive precise updates about their orders.
When a hurricane is predicted, homeowners face the pressing need to secure their properties. Unfortunately, the demand for plywood can spike rapidly, often leaving retailers scrambling to provide the necessary materials. This partnership aims to alleviate such pressures by allowing stores to access real-time data regarding the location and estimated time of arrival (ETA) of plywood shipments. This capability significantly enhances a retailer's ability to quickly unload and sell plywood right off the arriving trucks, thus ensuring that communities can prepare for storms promptly.
Zack Steffen, General Manager of Industrials at Trackonomy, highlighted the importance of this partnership by stating, “Every minute counts when preparing for a hurricane. By using our SmartTape, we’re helping to close gaps between GP and their retail partners to keep an open line of communication from plant to customer.” This proactive approach provides what many within the industry refer to as the “Amazon effect” in lumber supply chains. It minimizes downtime and meets customer expectations, ensuring immediate access to needed supplies during critical times.
Resilience in supply chain logistics becomes paramount, especially during hurricane threats. Matt Wood, Sr. Business Logistic Manager at Georgia-Pacific, expressed that this partnership goes beyond efficiency— it embodies resilience. “When storms are on the horizon, knowing exactly when materials will arrive can make all the difference for our retail partners and, more importantly, for the families and communities they serve,” Wood noted.
The initial focus of this initiative targets hurricane-related plywood shipments specifically meant for Home Depot and Lowe's. However, both companies are looking at extending this innovative approach to include other materials, such as resin shipments, as well as broader shipment categories throughout the year. This evolution of the system is already operational, supporting plywood deliveries during the current hurricane season and equipping Gulf Coast communities with improved access to crucial resources.
