Cambrex and Partners Honored for Innovative Sustainable Practices in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Cambrex and Partners Honored for Sustainable Innovation
In a significant achievement for the pharmaceutical industry, Cambrex—a global leader in contract development and manufacturing—has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability and innovation. The company’s subsidiary, Snapdragon Chemistry, along with NewAmsterdam Pharma, received the prestigious 2026 Green Chemistry Challenge Award from the American Chemical Society. This award acknowledges their work on developing a greener synthetic pathway in the production of pharmaceuticals, specifically targeting the synthesis of obicetrapib, a potential therapy for dyslipidemia.
The partners created an industrial-scale method for producing the chiral tetrahydroquinoline core, a critical intermediate in obicetrapib synthesis. This new organocatalytic process is a significant advancement over previous manufacturing routes. It dramatically enhances efficiency by improving yield, reducing process mass intensity by around 80%, and eliminating aqueous waste generation. Moreover, the manufacturing cycle time was shortened by approximately 70%, while production costs were reduced by about 50%. These improvements not only benefit the companies involved but also contribute to broader environmental goals.
In addition to the Green Chemistry Challenge Award, Cambrex's facility in Milan has been awarded the EcoVadis Gold rating, positioning it within the top 5% of organizations recognized for their commitment to environmental, social, and ethical standards. This accolade reflects Cambrex's strategic objectives, including achieving a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across its network, with an ambitious target of reducing emissions by 50% by 2030.
Further emphasizing its sustainability efforts, Q1 Scientific, another Cambrex subsidiary, has entered a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) with Flogas to procure renewable electricity from the Cronalaght Wind Farm. This initiative is expected to cover around 50% of the electricity needs for Q1 Scientific's Waterford site, thereby supporting both community and client environmental objectives. Cambrex’s CEO, Thomas Loewald, stated, “At Cambrex, we are dedicated to continually reducing our environmental impact for the benefit of our communities and ensuring long-term, sustainable manufacturing solutions for our customers.”
Cambrex has over 45 years of experience in providing comprehensive drug substance development and manufacturing services across the entire drug lifecycle. With a talented team of 2,000 professionals serving clients in North America and Europe, the company offers substantial expertise in various specialized drug substance technologies, including continuous flow synthesis, biocatalysis, and the handling of complex synthetic compounds. As the pharmaceutical industry grows increasingly focused on sustainability, Cambrex and its partners are leading by example, demonstrating that innovative practices can go hand in hand with environmental responsibility.
With the ongoing collaborations and innovations, Cambrex is set on a path not only to improve drug manufacturing efficiency but also to inspire other companies in the sector to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both the industry and the planet. As they continue to break new ground, their efforts highlight the importance of responsible manufacturing in the pharmaceutical landscape.
