Innovative Architecture Contest at WHAT MUSEUM
WHAT MUSEUM, located in Shinagawa, Tokyo, is set to host an exciting model competition starting April 21, 2026. This initiative invites architects to submit their innovative designs related to the upcoming exhibition titled "Wavy Sheets and Coral Reefs - Eight Practices Throwing Architecture Far Away". The competition aims to open new perspectives on architecture through the use of models, encouraging participants to explore both familiar and distant elements in their designs.
This unique competition will highlight the insights of eight renowned architects who will showcase their works alongside the competition entries. Participants are encouraged to express their ideas on the theme of "Things Nearby and Far Away,” prompting them to challenge conventional views in architecture. By re-imagining the relationship between immediate and distant aspects, entrants can explore how architecture influences society and offers varied viewpoints.
Competition Overview
The model competition serves as a related initiative to the exhibition mentioned earlier. By utilizing models, the architects aim to invite viewers to understand their thought processes and explorations within the field of architecture. The competition not only recognizes creativity and innovation in model design but also emphasizes the importance of addressing contemporary issues such as technological advancements, climate change, and social dynamics.
Theme
The theme of this competition, "Things Nearby and Far Away," encourages participants to reflect on:
- - The realities that are too close to be seen clearly.
- - The concepts that feel too distant to comprehend.
Models serve as tools for traversing this distance, making the apparent complexities of architecture more tangible. Participants are invited to submit their design ideas that engage with this theme. The work can be an expression of architectural thought, allowing for flexibility in what constitutes a model - it could be incomplete ideas or structural proposals.
