Exciting New Program for Teens at Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art
The Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art (MOMAT), located near the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda, is set to launch an innovative program aimed at middle and high school students, titled "Teen Program: Stepping Outside Yourself…". This unique initiative will run from October 2025 to April 2026, featuring a total of eight engaging sessions.
The program will provide opportunities for participants to deepen their understanding of art through dialogues with artists from the museum's collection and various field experts, as well as workshops. Notably, the latter part of the program will empower teens to design and host art-related activities directed toward elementary school students. This initiative encourages creativity and communication among peers, with an expected participant cap of 20 students, and the best part is, there is no participation fee!
Applications will be accepted from September 19 to September 30, 2025, via the museum's website.
For many students contemplating their future careers, engaging with art and expressing their thoughts and ideas is a vital experience that enhances self-awareness, curiosity, and expressive skills. Unfortunately, programs aimed at middle and high school students are still rare at museums across the country, limiting their opportunities to experience the art world.
MOMAT's extensive collection spans from the late 19th century to present-day Japanese art, offering a captivating overview of this historical journey. Young participants can connect the social contexts of the artworks with historical events they study in school, creating a rich learning environment grounded in real experience.
Through this program, MOMAT aims to introduce future generations of middle and high school students to the allure of art and museums. It seeks to cultivate a lens for students to reflect on themselves, others, and contemporary social challenges, thereby widening their possibilities and perspectives.
