Helium Recycling Workshop at Okayama University
On June 22, 2026, Okayama University, located in Okayama City, will host a Helium Recycling Workshop at the KIBINOVE co-innovation lab on its Tsushima campus. The event aims to address the increasing concerns surrounding helium price surges and supply shortages. This workshop will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing attendees to join either in person or online via Zoom.
The workshop will begin at 1:00 PM and conclude at 5:45 PM, followed by a networking session at the J Terrace Cafe on campus. Participants can expect presentations from experts in the field of helium recycling and recovery from used equipment. The workshop will feature a range of speakers, including researchers and technical staff from various institutions involved in helium recycling initiatives.
The agenda includes a welcome address from Okayama University President, Yoshitomo Nasu, and several informative presentations focusing on the current state and future expectations for research infrastructure by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Furthermore, the program will dive into specific initiatives regarding helium recycling from retired equipment, showcasing innovative projects from institutions such as Okayama University, the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, and others.
A panel discussion will follow, where experts will discuss challenges and potential solutions regarding helium recycling efforts in different regions of Japan. The discussion will be facilitated by the Okayama University's Equipment Sharing Task Force leader, Koji Hatanaka. The goal of the workshop is to foster collaboration among universities and research organizations to form a robust helium recycling network across various regions.
Participants interested in attending are encouraged to register via a form available online, with a deadline set for June 18, 2026. This event represents a significant opportunity to contribute to addressing helium supply challenges through collaborative efforts.
The workshop not only highlights the importance of recycling helium but also serves as a platform for stakeholders to share insights and propose solutions to common challenges. With rising costs and supply concerns, such initiatives are crucial, and the hope is that this workshop will galvanize a concerted national effort towards sustainable helium management.
