New Survey Highlights Homebuyer Challenges in North Texas
A recent survey conducted by Texans Credit Union sheds light on the obstacles aspiring homeowners face in North Texas. With ongoing fluctuations in the housing market, uncertainty regarding homeownership is becoming a significant hurdle for many.
According to the survey, a staggering
80% of potential buyers reported being only somewhat or not at all knowledgeable about the homebuying process, indicating a substantial awareness gap. Furthermore,
58% of respondents expressed concerns about their eligibility for a mortgage, despite national data showing a mere
8% mortgage application denial rate. The disconnect between the actual mortgage landscape and public perception complicates the journey to homeownership.
David Frazier, President and CEO of Texans Credit Union, emphasized that despite prevailing high-interest rates and softening prices, many buyers seem hesitant. "The usual challenges of entering the housing market can feel like insurmountable mountains when compounded by significant knowledge and confidence gaps, especially among first-time buyers," he stated.
Understanding Homebuyer Knowledge Gaps
The survey further exposes critical areas of ignorance among potential buyers that directly affect their affordability and accessibility to housing. For instance:
- - 61% of respondents are unclear about when private mortgage insurance (PMI) can be eliminated.
- - A shocking 73% are unfamiliar with options to buy down interest rates effectively.
- - 60% don't know how the Texas homestead exemption can beneficially impact their tax situation.
- - Furthermore, 94% were unaware that individuals who have not owned a home in the past three years could qualify for first-time homebuyer assistance, a crucial aspect that could make homeownership more attainable.
"Understanding these elements can profoundly influence a buyer’s journey. With precise information, many might discover more pathways to homeownership than they previously believed to be possible," noted Angie Jackson, VP of Real Estate Lending at Texans Credit Union.
Financial Hurdles Compounding Challenges
The impacts of knowledge gaps are further exacerbated by financial obstacles. Nearly
97% of respondents cited at least one financial challenge, with the top three being:
- - Saving for a down payment (42%)
- - Concerns about credit scores (41%)
- - High home prices (40%)
Additionally, the survey highlighted how financial anxiety is affecting life decisions. A remarkable
79% of potential buyers reported postponing significant life milestones for the sake of saving for a home. This includes delaying vacations (
41%), purchasing vehicles (
33%), retirement savings (
23%), childbearing (
22%), and marriages (
17%).
Future Aspirations and Calls to Action
Looking forward, only about
28% of responders expressed an inclination to actively pursue homeownership if interest rates remain around or above
6% over the next year, while
39% remain undecided, underscoring the urgency to address both knowledge and financial barriers.
In response to these findings, Texans Credit Union is organizing a
free trivia night aimed at educating potential buyers while allowing them to win home loan credits and additional prizes. This event reflects the credit union's commitment to empowering Texans on their financial journeys.
Details of the Trivia Event:
- - When: Thursday, April 9, from 7-9 p.m.

The survey was executed by Atomik Research on behalf of Texans Credit Union, encompassing responses from 1,000 adults aged 18 and older in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area who aspire to homeownership. Conducted from February 27 to March 18, 2026, it holds an overall margin of error of approximately
3% at a
95% confidence level.
