Exploring the Cutting-Edge Developments in Sustainable Aviation Fuel at NEDO Seminar

Exploring the Future of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

On September 8, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a significant seminar featuring Takahisa Yano, the Head of the Biomass Unit in the Renewable Energy Department of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The seminar aims to unveil the latest trends and technological developments related to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a crucial topic for the aviation sector aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Importance of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

As the aviation industry races toward achieving carbon neutrality, the introduction of SAF stands as a key challenge. These fuels contribute to a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions and, on an international level, the ICAO’s CORSIA system will mandate carbon emission reduction efforts from airlines across various nations starting in the fiscal year 2027. The moves toward broader implementation are already gaining momentum.

During the presentation, participants will gain a fundamental understanding of SAF, recent manufacturing technologies, and both domestic and international trends and challenges surrounding its adoption. The seminar will especially focus on NEDO's technical development support through past demonstrations, as well as future initiatives and prospects in the development and implementation of SAF.

Seminar Overview

This seminar will cover the following key topics:

1. Background and Requirements for SAF Development
- (1) What is SAF?
- (2) Climate Change Mitigation in the Aviation Sector
- (3) Essential Criteria for SAF

2. Manufacturing Processes, Challenges, and Regulations of SAF
- (1) Conversion processes from various raw materials to SAF
- (2) Challenges associated with SAF manufacturing and supply
- (3) Fuel standards (ASTM D7566) and CEF certification
