BayCare Launches Florida's First Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center for Immediate Mental Health Support

BayCare Opens Florida's First Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center

On February 27, 2025, BayCare Health System proudly inaugurated Florida's first Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center in New Port Richey. As the regional leader in behavioral health services, BayCare recognized the urgent need for accessible mental health care services, particularly in Pasco County. This innovative facility aims to deliver timely interventions for adults experiencing mental health crises or substance use disorders, bypassing the traditional barriers often faced in emergency situations.

A New Solution for Mental Health Care

The creation of this dedicated outpatient center, which welcomed patients earlier this month, was made possible by a $3.6 million grant from the Pasco County Commission. Addressed at 8005 King Helie Boulevard, the center serves to bridge the gap in urgent mental health care, allowing individuals to seek help before their situations escalate.

Tracey Kaly, BayCare's Director of Clinical Operations, emphasized that many people only pursue help during a crisis when their options seem limited to hospital visits or law enforcement calls. This new center offers what she describes as a “safe space” where qualified professionals can assess individuals promptly, provide necessary interventions, and connect them to ongoing care, thus reducing the likelihood of hospitalization.

A Welcoming Environment for Patients

Upon arrival at the BayCare Behavioral Health Urgent Care, patients enter a calming setting designed to promote peace and comfort. They undergo an initial screening and a comprehensive clinical evaluation to determine the most appropriate short-term interventions required. Furthermore, they can collaborate with recovery support specialists—individuals who share their personal experiences to inspire hope and provide guidance during difficult times.

The project received crucial backing from the Pasco County Commission, which allocated a significant portion of the county's opioid settlement funds for this initiative. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Commissioners Jack Mariano and Kathryn Starkey extolled the facility's necessity for local residents, highlighting its potential to save lives and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers by decreasing incarceration related to mental health crises.

Early Success Story

Since commencing operations three weeks ago, the BayCare Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center is already proving effective, with every patient treated receiving a comprehensive safety plan and timely follow-up appointments. This proactive approach ensures that individuals can receive necessary assistance without ending up hospitalized—a goal that aligns with the center's mission to provide critical support without stigma or delay.

Operating Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., the facility allows for same-day appointments, making access to essential mental health services more convenient than ever. Individuals in need can reach out to the center at (727) 281-3350 for assistance.
