PMI U.S. Empowers Local Solutions with the Community Futures Challenge

In a bold move to address pressing community needs across the nation, Philip Morris International's U.S. branch (PMI U.S.) has unveiled the Community Futures Challenge. This initiative seeks to identify and support innovative ideas from local leaders and nonprofit organizations that have the potential to markedly improve the resilience and growth of communities in various states.

Addressing Community Challenges

The challenge comes at a crucial time when many localities are eager to explore new pathways to resilience and opportunity. PMI U.S. recognizes that some of the most effective solutions often stem from those who are deeply embedded within these communities. Hence, the initiative aims to spotlight practical and innovative approaches developed by community changemakers.

As Stacey Kennedy, the CEO of PMI U.S., expressed, “The next chapter of America will be driven by those who are willing to face challenges head-on and turn ambitious ideas into actionable solutions.” This perspective creates a platform for creativity and grassroots innovation, ensuring that communities have a voice in shaping their futures.

The Challenge Details

The Community Futures Challenge will extend funding opportunities to eligible nonprofit organizations registered as 501(c)(3) in the U.S. across all 50 states. The initiative will comprise a regional innovation hub tour designed to spotlight local problem-solvers, convening business, civic, and community leaders in four key cities: Stamford, Connecticut; Phoenix, Arizona; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Jacksonville, Florida.

Eligible applicants are required to focus their projects on adults aged 21 and above and be in an early-stage, pilot, or scaling phase to qualify for one of five grants—each valued at $50,000—to bring their ideas to fruition. Interested parties can apply online at www.america250cfc.org.

Community-Led Innovation

An influential survey conducted by The Harris Poll found that 86% of U.S. adults believe innovations are most valuable when they address real-world problems. An overwhelming 90% feel that companies should collaborate as community partners rather than impose their ideas on a community. This aligns perfectly with the ethos of the Community Futures Challenge, which aims to foster grassroots innovation.

Arizona State University (ASU) will collaborate with PMI U.S. in managing the judging process, ensuring that it is rigorous and independent. Chaired by Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan, the distinguished panel of judges will include notable figures like Chief Master Sergeant JoAnne S. Bass (Ret.), renowned for her unprecedented achievements in leadership within the U.S. military, and Steve Clemons, Editor at Large for The National Interest. Collectively, this panel brings a wealth of expertise across various fields, ensuring that the most impactful ideas are recognized and funded.
