Celebrating Young Innovators: Massachusetts Students at the Mott Million Dollar Challenge
Three ambitious students from Massachusetts are set to make their mark on a national stage by participating in the esteemed Mott Million Dollar Challenge. This annual competition, which this year saw entries from over 5,300 young innovators from across the United States, highlights the entrepreneurial spirit among K-12 students. The event will take place on June 15-16 in downtown Flint, Michigan, and is sponsored by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
From Thousands to Sixty
Out of an impressive 3,700 submissions, only 60 ideas were selected as semifinalists, demonstrating the exceptional quality and creativity of the proposed projects. The process began with numerous submissions from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., showing the widespread enthusiasm for entrepreneurship among students. The semifinalists now prepare to pitch their concepts to a panel of judges in hopes of making it to the final round.
Meet the Massachusetts Semifinalists
The Commonwealth is proud to showcase three distinctive and innovative ideas:
- - Planet Pal Lunch Kits — Shinjinee Khan, a second-grader from Flaherty Elementary School, presents a social pitch aimed at eliminating single-use plastics in schools. Her personalized reusable lunch sets include engraved water bottles and utensils, contributing to environmental sustainability and encouraging peers to embrace eco-friendliness.
- - ReHappy — Developed by Siddharth Vikram, a seventh-grader at Carlisle Middle School, this app is powered by AI and augmented reality to transform rehabilitation into an engaging game. It addresses physical, cognitive, and sensory therapy through interactive gaming, enabling better tracking of patient progress for therapists and healthcare providers.
- - Civix — Designed for the older audience, Amirtha Chennakesavan, an 11th grader at Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, created a gamified learning application. Civix educates students about government and voting in an engaging format, aiming to increase civic engagement through interactive lessons and competitions.
Each of these young innovators will receive $5,000 to support their projects, which they will pitch live to a panel of experts and entrepreneurs. This platform not only celebrates their achievements but also enhances their entrepreneurial skills, preparing them for future endeavors.
The Vision Behind the Challenge
