Ontario International Airport Economic Impact Surges to Nearly $5 Billion Annually After a Decade of Local Control
Ontario International Airport's Economic Transformation
Nearly ten years have passed since Ontario International Airport (ONT) returned to local management, and it’s clear that this decisive change has had a massive effect on the region's economy. An independent analysis conducted by Oxford Economics confirms the airport's role as a vital economic driver in Southern California, generating a staggering $4.8 billion in economic output in 2024 alone. This remarkable statistic signifies a 75% increase in the airport's total economic impact since its transition to local governance in November 2016, under the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA).
A Major Economic Engine
With a profound enhancement in passenger services and freight capacity, ONT has risen to become an essential player in the aviation sector. The airport serves over 7 million passengers each year, a substantial increase from the 4.3 million it catered to before regaining local control. A diverse and expanded domestic and international route network allows travelers the convenience of accessing air travel options without needing to venture out to other airports.
The airport has not only focused on passenger traffic but has also embraced its role as a leading cargo hub. Its commitment to growth and innovation is evident through significant investments like the ONT BOLD initiative, aimed at preparing the airport for ongoing success. This effort has been pivotal in supporting both local businesses and the broader logistics network that characterizes Southern California.
Job Creation and Economic Growth
According to the Oxford Economics study, the number of jobs attributable to activities related to ONT shot up from 14,100 to 24,300, marking an impressive growth rate of 72%. Thanks to these developments, the airport's gross domestic product contribution climbed from $1.7 billion to $3 billion in the same period, showcasing a 76% increase that reinforces the importance of local airport management.
Tax revenues generated from airport-associated activities also jumped from $490 million to $820 million annually, providing a much-needed fiscal boost to the local and regional economy.
Logistics Center of Excellence
The airport's strategic location supports one of North America's preeminent logistics hubs. A whopping 150,000 jobs and an impressive $14.1 billion in gross domestic product are attributed to logistics and supply chain activities in the vicinity of ONT. This underscores ONT's vital position in linking businesses and facilitating goods movement efficiently across the region and beyond.
Dan Martin, Lead Economist at Oxford Economics, highlighted the extensive growth since 2016, affirming the airport's vital role within Southern California's logistics ecosystem and its contributions to facilitating convenient air travel for residents.
A Model for the Future
Atif Elkadi, CEO of the Ontario International Airport Authority, emphasized that the airport's success is a testament to strong leadership and community commitment. He stated,
