Indonesia's Surabaya University Visits Okayama University to Strengthen Academic Ties

On January 21, 2026, Okayama University, located in the city of Okayama, welcomed a delegation from Indonesia’s National University of Surabaya. This visit included notable figures such as the Dean of the Medical Faculty and other heads of various departments including Language and Cultural Studies, Food Security, Education, and Economics. The delegation was received by Takayoshi Suzuki, the Vice President in charge of International Affairs, during a courtesy visit, followed by discussions with deans from Okayama University’s relevant faculties.

This meeting coincided with an introduction to a project commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, aimed at bolstering overseas networks to promote studying in Japan, particularly focusing on Indonesia as a key region. The project seeks to double the number of students from ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, by 2026.

Among the participants was Associate Professor Pradini Puspitaningayu from the Faculty of Engineering, a graduate of Okayama University. She expressed her enthusiasm for supporting students from her homeland in pursuing studies at Okayama University. During the discussions with faculty heads from Okayama, participants, including Jun Wada, the Dean of the Medical Faculty, Kyoko Tanaka, the Dean of the Literature Faculty, Yuki Ichinose, the Dean of the Agriculture Faculty, and Toshinori Kuwahara, Deputy Dean of the Education Faculty, engaged in a lively exchange of ideas regarding future collaborative opportunities.

A significant point brought up by Syafi’ul Anam, the Dean of the Language and Cultural Studies Faculty, was the presence of a Japanese language program at Surabaya University, which has about 1,000 enrolled students. He highlighted the growing interest among Indonesian students in studying in Japan, indicating a promising potential for increased enrollment.

Since signing a departmental agreement in 2023 between the Graduate School of Environmental Life Science at Okayama University and Surabaya University, both institutions have maintained active exchanges primarily in the engineering field. The discussions have now expanded horizons, opening the door for further academic and research collaboration in new disciplines.

The project to enhance the overseas network for promoting study in Japan is crucial for achieving the set goal of 103,861 students from the ASEAN region in five years. Okayama University has established offices in ASEAN cities including Jakarta, Surabaya, Kuala Lumpur, Yangon, Mandalay, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane, aiming to attract excellent international students from these regions.

In summary, the visit emphasized the importance of international collaboration in education and the role of Okayama University as an attractive destination for international students, particularly from Southeast Asia. Both universities are optimistic about advancing their partnership and increasing student exchanges in the foreseeable future.
