New Assortment of Gifts Featuring Miyako's Specialty Fish for Furusato Tax
In an exciting development for local affairs, Red Horse Corporation, headquartered in Sumida, Tokyo, has collaborated with a seafood processing company in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture, to introduce a new line of gifts called 'Sanriku no Megumi' (Blessings of Sanriku). Known for its significant fish catch, this initiative sees the prestigious 'Miyako Madara' (Pacific cod) registered as a gift offering for the local Furusato tax program.
Red Horse Corporation, which focuses on regional revitalization, is working alongside Miyako City to support its Furusato tax activities starting from 2024. Collaborating with Miyako Shokuhin, a local seafood processing firm, the two parties have developed items that leverage local craftsmanship. In September, they unveiled new products including salted mackerel and autumn salmon, followed now by the inclusion of cut Pacific cod, a fish renowned for its quality.
Miyako City is celebrated across Japan for its high-quality Madara, which is so fresh it can be consumed as sashimi. The city has effectively marketed this fish under the name 'Miyako Madara'. Every winter, the 'Miyako Madara Gourmet Fair' encourages local eateries in both Miyako and Morioka to explore unique menu offerings featuring this fish, demonstrating its cultural significance and culinary versatility.
In this recent product line, the 'Miyako Madara' will be offered in convenient 500g packages, ready for various culinary applications. The fish is meticulously deboned by hand at Miyako Shokuhin, ensuring that each portion is easy to use. With no added salt, it's perfect for conventional winter dishes such as 'taradaki' (cod hot pot), braises, fry, or even sautéing—a versatile ingredient for home cooks.
The Pacific cod raised in the tumultuous waters of the Sanriku coast is known for its firm texture, and upon cooking, becomes surprisingly tender. The fillets' refined and delicate flesh melt in the mouth, reminiscent of soft snowflakes.
In addition to the 'Miyako Madara', the new assortment also includes the already popular salted mackerel and autumn salmon, collectively providing a rich sampling of Miyako's marine bounty. Each set contains 500 grams of each of the three fish species, presenting a splendid opportunity for supporters to enjoy a variety of renowned regional seafood in a single donation.
In tandem with these fish products, the delectable 'Tappuri-zuke' series, a well-loved rice accompaniment offered by local company Kawashu, has also been registered as a Furusato tax gift. This series pairs flavorful marine delicacies such as sea urchin, salmon roe, and scallops, all soaked in Kawashu's distinctive soy sauce blend, enhancing the dining experience with an exquisite combination of textures and flavors.
