Linda Hall Library Opens Applications for 2025-2026 Fellowships
The iconic Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering and Technology has officially opened the application window for its 2025-2026 fellowship program. This initiative is designed to provide crucial financial support alongside access to one of the globe’s most esteemed research libraries, aiming to enhance the scholarly endeavors of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and independent scholars, particularly in the fields encompassing the history of science and related humanities.
According to Benjamin Gross, Vice President for Research and Scholarship at the Linda Hall Library, the program is dedicated to backing researchers who are uncovering the human narratives that underpin remarkable scientific achievements throughout history. Gross expressed enthusiasm for this year’s fellowships, noting their inclusive appeal for applicants from Kansas City, across the United States, and around the world. The goal is to promote innovative work that reveals the transformative discoveries and inventions that have shaped modern life.
The library offers both residential and virtual fellowship options. For those able to conduct their research in Kansas City, residential fellowships are available, providing an enriching environment that leverages the library's robust collections. Additionally, remote scholars can participate virtually, utilizing the library’s extensive digital resources to propel their research forward.
Applicants may apply for funding up to four months, with stipends set at $3,000 per month for doctoral candidates and $4,200 per month for postdoctoral researchers. These competitive funds are designed to alleviate the financial burden associated with research and living expenses, enabling scholars to focus entirely on their projects.
Furthermore, the library has instituted several specialized fellowships catering to distinct groups of researchers:
- - The National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship: This award offers nine months of residential funding at $5,000 per month specifically for a postdoctoral scholar researching the synergy between science and the humanities.
- - The History of Science and Medicine Fellowship: Cosponsored by the Clendening History of Medicine Library, this fellowship grants one month of residential funding at $3,000 per month for a doctoral student studying the intersections between science and medicine.
- - The Pearson Fellowship in Aerospace History: Awarding up to two months of residential support at $4,200 per month, this fellowship targets postdoctoral scholars focusing on aviation or spaceflight history.
- - The Presidential Fellowship in Bibliography: Also providing postdoctoral researchers with funding of up to four months at $4,200 per month, this fellowship aims to explore books and manuscripts as physical artifacts, uncovering their significance in historical scholarship.
An invaluable benefit for current and past fellows is access to digitization privileges, facilitating their use of the library’s vast collections in science and engineering seamlessly.
Prospective applicants need to note that the submission deadline for applications is January 17, 2025. Those interested in learning more about the fellowship offerings can reach out via email at [email protected]
