The Launch of Saudi International Handicrafts Week 'Banan'
The highly anticipated third edition of the Saudi International Handicrafts Week, known as 'Banan', has officially commenced in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This event is hosted at the prestigious Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, bringing together an impressive assembly of over 400 artisans from more than 40 different countries. Participants include representatives from Syria, the UAE, Egypt, Oman, Bahrain, and Jordan, with the People's Republic of China as the honored guest this year.
Celebration of Cultural Heritage
The year 2025 has been designated as the Year of Handicrafts, further enhancing the significance of this event. The Saudi Heritage Commission, responsible for organizing the event, aims to highlight handicrafts as an essential part of Saudi Arabia's cultural identity. By providing a platform for artisans worldwide, 'Banan' seeks to strengthen the Kingdom's presence in the creative landscape.
Chinese participation added a vibrant dimension to the event. The Ambassador of China to Saudi Arabia, Zhang Hua, visited the Chinese Pavilion where he observed live demonstrations by traditional artisans who had been specially invited to showcase their skills. These artisans presented craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations, captivating visitors with their intricate work. The ambassador expressed admiration for the organization of the event and acknowledged the Kingdom's role in promoting cultural and artistic exchanges.
Engaging Young Minds: Banan Story Zone
One of the highlights of this year's event is the engaging 'Banan Story' zone, designed especially for children. This interactive area transforms play into learning experiences, allowing young participants to explore various materials, experiment with tools, and create art inspired by the diverse handicrafts of the world. This initiative not only fosters creativity among children but also introduces them to a multitude of cultures, emphasizing the importance of understanding and appreciating diversity from a young age.
'Banan' stands out as one of the leading cultural events in the region, offering an international platform to celebrate traditional craftsmanship. This event not only promotes artisans but also reflects Saudi Arabia's growing contribution to the cultural and creative economy.
Saudi Heritage Commission's Role
Established in 2020, the Heritage Commission is one of eleven sector-specific commissions under the Ministry of Culture in Saudi Arabia. Its mission encompasses overseeing the preservation, promotion, and enhancement of the Kingdom's cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. Future plans from the commission include opening several archaeological sites to the public and supporting the publication of research related to heritage and archaeology.
Through active engagement in such enriching events, the Ministry of Culture aims to develop the cultural economy while significantly enhancing the everyday lives of its citizens, residents, and visitors alike. The global recognition of events like 'Banan' is a testament to Saudi Arabia's rich history and ongoing commitment to cultural expression.
