Mars Unveils New $240 Million Nature's Bakery Manufacturing Facility in Salt Lake City

Mars Opens New $240 Million Facility in Salt Lake City

Mars, Incorporated has officially opened a new manufacturing plant for its popular snack brand, Nature's Bakery, in Salt Lake City, Utah. With an impressive investment of $240 million, this facility is not just a testament to the brand's growth but also a commitment to providing wholesome snacks across the United States.

The new site spans over 339,000 square feet and has the capacity to produce more than one billion snack bars annually. This development will also create over 230 new jobs, thereby supporting the local economy and meeting the increasing demand for Nature’s Bakery products among families.

Steve Gardiner, CEO of Nature's Bakery, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “The biggest step we can take to meet our growth goals is making more of the snacks people love, and this new baking facility helps us do exactly that. It gives us the space to grow today and tomorrow, while letting us bake even more efficiently and with even higher quality.” Gardiner emphasized that this facility will enable them to continue delivering feel-good snacks to families across the country.

Since the acquisition of Nature's Bakery in March 2021, Mars has invested significantly in expanding the brand, which is now on track to more than double its size from 2020. Blas Maquivar, the Global President of the Health & Wellness Division at Mars, highlighted that the snack industry continues to evolve, and the company is committed to innovating in ways that enhance consumer preferences.

Strategically located in Salt Lake City’s Mountain West neighborhood, the new manufacturing facility will enhance national distribution and reduce transportation distances to retailers, which is crucial for streamlining logistics. Additionally, the facility boasts LEED Silver certification, contributing to sustainability efforts by reducing CO₂ emissions from trucking by an estimated 5,700 tons annually.

Incorporating smart automation into its operations, the facility utilizes advanced systems for ingredient handling, mixing, and cooling. These improvements not only boost food safety and consistency but also provide high-skilled positions for employees, paving the way for career development within the workforce.

Officials have applauded the new development in Salt Lake City; Jefferson Moss, Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, mentioned that manufacturing plays a pivotal role in Utah’s economy, driving job creation and reinforcing the state’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing.

Additionally, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall praised Nature's Bakery for its commitment to the community, noting their dedication to local outreach even before the manufacturing lines began operation.

With a presence in 49 states, Mars employs over 70,000 associates and operates dozens of factories, emphasizing its commitment to the U.S. workforce and manufacturing industry.
