Okayama University's Medical Technology Workshop: A Learning Experience

On February 2, 2026, Okayama University, a leading national university in Japan, hosted the 88th Medical Technology Training Session at its Shikata campus. This notable event marked a significant collaboration between the Medical Technology Department and the General Technical Department, featuring a hybrid format that allowed face-to-face participation as well as online attendance.

The workshop aimed to promote communication and knowledge exchange among technical staff across different fields, including educational research technicians, facility technicians, and medical technicians. By bridging the gaps between these roles, the workshop sought to enhance their skills and competencies, ultimately fostering an invigorated organizational atmosphere.

The session commenced with an opening address by Mr. Nobuhito Sato, Vice President of Okayama University and Chief Technical Officer. He emphasized the importance of nurturing highly skilled technical staff within the university, stating, “Creating opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration is vital for gaining new insights.” Sato also highlighted the introduction of the prestigious title “Honorary Technical Advisor,” which is aimed not only at recognizing past achievements but also at supporting second careers for technical professionals.

Furthermore, Mr. Sato referenced President Yasuyuki Nasu's vision for supporting essential healthcare teams, advocating for opportunities where technical staff can gain new knowledge and skills. He encouraged participants to leverage such training sessions for their professional development.

The workshop featured several presentations by key professionals in the Medical Technology Department. Mr. Akihito Higashikage, Director of the Medical Technology Department, provided an overview of the department's operations, while his team members, including Deputy Chief Clinical Laboratory Technologist Mr. Hakuoki Aoe, and vice clinical laboratory technologists Mr. Koji Iio and Ms. Saori Nobusada, discussed specific areas such as genetic and genomic testing, microbiology lab procedures, and physiology testing.

During these presentations, participants learned about the extensive support services offered by the medical technology department at Okayama University Hospital, which spans from sample testing to comprehensive diagnostic support. The ability to rapidly diagnose using the latest genetic analysis techniques and address issues related to drug-resistant bacteria was among the critical takeaways, showcasing the department’s advanced technical capabilities.

An essential point made during the discussions was the staff's shared mindset that “samples are parts of the patients' bodies.” This consciousness drives their commitment to thoroughness in every lab test, ensuring accurate diagnostic support for clinicians and ultimately better patient care. The clarity of the presentations made it easy for even non-specialists to understand the department's vital role in supporting doctors' decisions regarding diagnoses and treatments.

After the presentations, an engaging Q&A session ensued, allowing attendees to inquire about strategies for combating resistant bacteria, requests for laboratory visits, and utilizing cutting-edge equipment effectively. This lively exchange underscored the workshop's objectives to enhance collaboration among technical staff.

Moving forward, the General Technical Department at Okayama University will continue to strengthen connections between technical personnel and provide diverse training programs aimed at elevating staff competencies. This commitment aligns with the university's mission to be a central hub of research and education, empowering partners in clinical and academic activities.

Since 2022, Okayama University has been collaborating with Tokyo University of Science on their advanced technical training initiative called “TC College.” As a satellite campus, Okayama University will offer a dedicated “Bioengineering Course” starting in the fiscal year 2023, strategically promoting its areas of strength.
