Montefiore Einstein Secures $8 Million to Enhance Father-Child Relationships Through Support Programs

Montefiore Einstein Secures $8 Million for Father-Child Programs

On May 28, 2026, Montefiore Einstein announced the acquisition of $8 million in federal and municipal grants aimed at strengthening the bond between fathers and their children through the HERO Dads program. This initiative is crucial in providing supportive frameworks for fathers, who often face challenges in their parenting roles due to various societal and personal obstacles.

Research consistently highlights the significant positive effects of having a strong father figure in a child's life, such as enhanced emotional security, self-esteem, and even improved academic skills in areas like math and language. Despite these benefits, many fathers lack guidance on how to navigate parenthood effectively. The HERO Dads program has filled this gap for over five years by fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for dads.

Extensive Support for Fathers

The recent funding will enhance Montefiore Einstein's outreach through personalized counseling sessions, which will pair fathers with mental health professionals to address individual needs and concerns. These private meetings aim to break down barriers that hinder their relationships with their children. Additionally, a new four-week trauma-informed support group will be introduced as part of the program, further enhancing its repertoire of resources.

The HERO Dads program will also offer a twelve-week course designed to fortify co-parenting relationships, critical for the stability and wellbeing of children. Job readiness and financial courses, provided by FEDCAP, will equip fathers with practical skills necessary for achieving economic and familial stability.

Dr. Traci Maynigo, a clinical psychologist and director of the HERO Dads program, stated, "Our programs encompass skills development in areas such as communication and conflict resolution, essential for achieving family success. The journey of a parent is rewarding, yet it can be just as challenging, especially when trying to develop new skills and alleviate behaviors rooted in past trauma."

Evolving Patterns in Parenting

Around two-thirds of adults have experienced at least one adverse childhood event, significantly impacting their parenting capabilities. The HERO Dads program's mission is to create a safe and judgment-free zone where fathers can share experiences, engage with peers, and select resources that resonate with them.

Dr. Moshe Moeller, Associate Director of HERO Dads, remarked, "Even after completing our program, fathers remain engaged in their children's lives. They provide emotional support, participate in activities, and maintain a watchful eye over their kids. Our new offerings centered on emotional security, confidence building, peer connection, and economic stability will foster deeper bonds between fathers and their children while enhancing their resilience."

Leon Rosa, a participant from the Bronx, credits HERO Dads with drastically changing his life. He shared, "It's a space where I can be vulnerable and learn new ways to express love and discipline that benefit my child as he grows. As a young dad, learning from others has shifted my perspective in unimaginable ways."
