Insights from Lingokids on Children's Screentime
A recent study conducted by Lingokids, a top online entertainment platform for kids, sheds light on the complex relationship parents have with screentime limits. According to the Kids Interactive Entertainment Report, a remarkable 95% of parents often find themselves extending the screentime they initially set for their children, particularly for those aged eight and under.
The study was compiled through surveys of over 2,000 U.S. parents, alongside data from 20 million families utilizing the Lingokids platform. The results revealed that 93% of parents establish some form of screentime limitation—using timers or merely monitoring time—demonstrating a widespread understanding of the need to regulate screen use.
How are Parents Managing Screentime?
The most common methods parents used to limit their children's screentime include:
- - Watching the Clock: 40.4% of parents manage time manually.
- - Device Time-Limit Functions: 31% prefer built-in timers on devices.
- - App Time-Limit Functions: 21.6% rely on app-specific limits.
- - No Active Limiting: Only 7% of parents do not impose any limits.
Despite these efforts, the reality paints a different picture. More than 95% of parents reported that they sometimes exceed these limits. Alarmingly, around 16% of parents admitted to overriding limits almost daily.
Reasons for Extending Screentime
The report further explores the motivations behind extending screentime. Many parents cited practical reasons for their choices, which predominantly include:
- - Completing Personal Tasks: 41% allow extra screentime to finish chores or work.
- - Special Occasions: 29.1% permit additional time for extraordinary events.
- - Child's Request: 22.3% of parents respond to direct requests from their children.
- - Boredom: Only 6.5% of parents extend time when kids express boredom.
One parent shared, “If my kids complete their chores or engage in creative activities, I’m willing to reward them with extra screentime, especially on Lingokids.” This sentiment underscores the challenge many parents face in balancing limits while recognizing the educational value of screen time.
Preferred Apps for Extra Screentime
When it comes to choosing which apps warrant extra screentime, Lingokids emerged as the standout favorite among parents. A staggering 92.9% said they would likely permit more time on Lingokids, followed by PBS Kids, which garnered a 64.4% approval rate for extra screentime requests.
Mikael Journo, COO and CMO of Lingokids, expressed satisfaction with these findings: “It's reassuring to see that families genuinely value our platform. We strive to be a trusted source of entertainment that not only captivates children but also eases parents’ concerns about screen time.”
Lingokids, with its diverse offerings including over 4,000 interactive activities, is continually working to ensure it provides high-quality, educational play for children aged 8 and under.
