2026 marks a special year for fans of Rokyoku, as the 59th Grand Rokyoku Competition is set to unfold on November 28 in the prestigious Edo-Tokyo Museum located in Sumida, Tokyo. This year’s theme, “Rokyoku Museum,” invites audiences to explore the evolution of this traditional art form from its historical roots to contemporary adaptations.

The event will be spearheaded by the General Incorporated Association of Japanese Rokyoku, under the guidance of esteemed director Tamagawa Taifuku. Yuuko Tamagawa, a remarkable 104-year-old performer, will grace the stage alongside a stellar lineup, promising an unforgettable experience. A Day of Reviving Tradition and Innovation


The day is divided into two main shows: the afternoon performance titled “Onko Chishin” and the evening program under the banner “Yuuou Maishin.”

Afternoon Program: “Onko Chishin”

This segment derives its essence from the rich historical tapestry of Rokyoku, emphasizing the ingenuity of its predecessors. Attendees will witness a captivating mix of classic narratives and thought-provoking discussions:
1. An exploration of the “Deroren Goton,” reflecting on Tamwa Taifuku's personal experiences.
2. “Miyazaki Toten-den Ushiemon,” a tale performed by Koyuki Minato and narrated by Mizuno Dousei.
3. The legendary “Shimizu Jirocho-den,” performed by Kikuharu Hirosawa.
4. A nostalgic audio segment featuring “Patriotic Rokyoku.
5. A contemporary piece, “The Black Bento,” performed by Katsu Chiyo Kimura.

During the intermission, attendees will have the opportunity to gather for a special group photo on stage.

6. An intriguing talk session titled, “I Saw the Deroren Goton!” led by Yuuko Tamagawa with Taifuku Tamagawa as the moderator.
7. A variety show with exciting performances by the Tōke Quartet.
8. The collaborative performance of “Shinshu Kutsukake Tokijirou.”
9. A contemporary singing session featuring “Mother of the Cliff.”
10. The dramatic conclusion with “Man, One Man - Amanoya Rihei,” performed by Sankyu Usuzumi.

Completing the day, the evening show focuses on the modern twists introduced by various Rokyoku performers:
1. The hit “Abumatsu Midorinosuke” performed by Minkako Tamagawa.
2. A mesmerizing depiction of “Onmyoji Biwa Genshou,” led by Sumire Tennchuuke.
3. The tale of “Red Horse Lord” showcasing the talents of Tōke Koutarou.
4. A collaborative performance with the Shamisen Orchestra - Kawachi Ondo.
5. A unique act, “Sonezaki Shinjyu,” showcasing stirring performances by Shinobu Tōke.
6. An action-packed rendition of “Karate Baka Arab Fenunroku.”
7. A powerful finale with “Kanjinchō” performed by Hayato Mayama.

Tickets for the gala event will be priced at 5,000 yen for the afternoon show and 4,000 yen for the evening. Discounts are available for students, with tickets set at 3,000 yen and 2,500 yen respectively. Combined tickets can be procured at 8,000 yen.
