UNESCO Celebrates Wenzhou's Cultural Achievements

In a remarkable turn of events, Wenzhou, a city in China's Zhejiang province, has recently received dual recognitions from UNESCO for its outstanding contributions to cultural heritage preservation and sustainable development. This commendation not only highlights the city's rich historical roots but also emphasizes its significant role in cultural exchange through the Maritime Silk Road.

On November 3, UNESCO awarded Wenzhou a certificate acknowledging its dedication to safeguarding traditional local skills and cultural heritage. This was followed by another commendation during the Maritime Silk Road Urban Cooperation and Development Conference, which took place on November 19, attended by over 300 local and international participants.

Ernesto Ottone Ramírez, the Assistant Director-General for Culture at UNESCO, delivered a video address praising Wenzhou's systematic efforts in integrating cultural preservation with tourism and sustainable urban development. He noted the city’s more than 5,000-year-old civilizational history and over 2,200 years of urban history, underscoring its important position in global cultural narratives.

Wenzhou's commitment to heritage is reflected in its impressive tally of cultural assets. The city boasts 35 items of national intangible cultural heritage, 159 provincial, and 836 municipal. This extensive inventory serves as a testament to the city's vibrant cultural landscape, rich in historical knowledge and ancient Chinese grammar that have made notable contributions to sustainable development.

Over the recent years, Wenzhou has taken proactive steps to enhance the innovative development of its intangible cultural heritage, establishing workshops and international communication research centers.
