Enhancing Support for Roadside Stations in Japan
In a significant cooperative initiative, the Japan Road Construction Industry Association, led by President Toshiyuki Ishii, is joining forces with the Japan Roadside Station Association, chaired by Nobuyoshi Kagehaji. Their aim is to bolster roadside stations throughout Japan, enhancing disaster preparedness, child care support, and extreme heat countermeasures. This program will unfold from FY2028 to FY2030, benefiting around 130 roadside stations nationwide.
Community Support Initiatives
The Japan Road Construction Industry Association has been actively involved in social contribution activities, focusing on augmenting the disaster response capabilities and child care facilities available at roadside stations. For three years spanning FY2020 to FY2022, the group donated portable generators to roadside stations identified in local disaster management plans. Following that, from FY2023 to FY2025, they provided a total of 142 simplified nursing rooms to achieve a 50% installation rate for baby corners at these facilities.
New Initiatives for Upcoming Years
For the new three-year support period, the Association plans to adapt donations based on the specific needs of each roadside station. This strategy not only supports disaster preparedness and family-friendly environments but also addresses the growing concerns about extreme heat. The donation campaign officially starts today, with items being distributed to the stations beginning in December.
Selected Items for Donation
The choice of donated items is meticulously planned, considering the increasing frequency of natural disasters, including earthquakes and heavy rainfall, as well as the need for comfort during summer heat waves. The program will provide the following three essential items:
1.
Portable Generators: Vital for ensuring electricity availability for local residents and facilitating the charging of devices like smartphones and laptops during outages.
2.
Simplified Nursing Rooms: Constructed from sturdy cardboard, these nursing rooms can withstand permanent installation yet are easily relocatable. They come equipped with nursing support chairs, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for mothers and infants.
3.
Spot Coolers: Designed for use during extreme heat, these coolers will be valuable for events and serve as evacuation centers in emergencies.
Commitment to Community Needs
This initiative reflects a keen understanding of the diverse roles that roadside stations must play, especially as they face various challenges like natural disasters and climatic changes. Through discussions with the Japan Roadside Station Association and considering past donation efforts' outcomes, the selected items are aimed at contributing positively to public safety and comfort during both normal operations and emergencies.
Future Steps
The ultimate goal is to elevate the operational capacity of roadside stations as disaster response points, while also creating an environment that is welcoming to families with children. By emphasizing extreme heat measures and facilities supportive of child care, the program aligns with the National Land Traffic Policy’s
